Well, I guess it depends, is it going to be a hangout coffee shop?
If so, deep couches, and comfy chairs, nice earth tones. So lots of room to lounge around, like it’s your living room. Free wi-fi, with maybe a rotating collection of art from local artists. And like a poetry jam or live music like once a month or so.
A small menu of sandwiches and pastry’s, and other finger foods.
Or that’s what I'd do. :D
Now an in and out place, should have less comfy chairs. You have to become a member of the coffee club to access the wi-fi. Brighter lights, cleaner whiter colors. And a collection of muffins and cookies, not a whole lot of choices for food.

Aesthetics is first impression, then how clean it is kept, items for sale other than the coffee (quality, uniqueness, practicality), attitude of the staff, fair/competitive pricing, hours open, catering, and how it SMELLS.

I hope this is helpful.

And don't forget the rule of thumb:
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

PS - your marketing technique of the stamped cards is good; advertisements via the Yellow Pages can be expensive, fliers are pretty cheap, calendars with coupons in the back is nice (for a general price for the calendar), advertising at local college is good for "student study", market with another company to help defray the cost with your company on one side, and theirs on the other - complimentary business that doesn't compete with yours (like a bookstore resale shop). Magnets are good. Contests are good. Write up in local paper is good. Working charities is good.
It's endless.
Good luck to you!

My brother used to be a city cop until he moved on to another law enforcement agency at the state level. I asked him why cops always went to donut shops. His reply was that they were usually the only ones open. So I suggest you just keep the coffee fresh and hot, the pastries and donuts fresh , and keep your hours late.

I think that various cakes, muffins, and cookies would be great desserts for your coffee shop. I think a soft, not too bright and warm atmoshpere with jazz music on the radio would be quite inviting.

Good Luck and Best Wishes!

Great coffee of course! We have a place here that serves sandwiches and salads at lunch time, its a small place but the food is great and the clerks are wonderful. So good coffee, great food at lunchtime and friendly clerks

Good customer service, great coffee, and acomfortable atmosphere. Oh yeah reasonable prices would be nice too, but that doesn't really matter.

A good range of items always attract me to a place. of course i'm allergic to caffeine and wheat so i normally have to pass on pastries and cakes anyway! i still can't help drooling over maple and pecan plaits tho!
