Like if an ambulance brought in a Patient who was fighting everybody?

It's us nurses who will have to deal with a combative patient before the doctor sees them. First we talk to the patient and try to find out why he/she is being combative. Sometimes it's because they are in severe pain. We can treat that. If they are combative because of drugs, alcohol or a psychotic episode (sometime due to brain damage), what we do is apply restraints and get a doctor's order for an antipsychotic such as haloperidol (Haldol) which we like to give IM (intramuscular) injection. Works every time!

We usually sedate them or restrain them, depending on their condition and other factors. They cannot be permitted to harm the medical staff trying to help them.

The nurses put them in restraints, basically buckle them down.

They will give them a shot of happy medicine and all will be good.
