My son was just bit by a dog we are watching for the day and I need to know if I need to do anything. It didn't break the skin, but it is a little red and swollen. Is there anything that I need to do because the skin isn't broken. We were told not to play rough because the dog is old but I think my son was being rough.

If the skin isn't broken, the dog was just giving him a warning, as a dog is very accurate/precise when they bite....Just put cold packs on it, and it will be fine...a good cheap lesson for him, in being gentle with animals...

If the skin is not broken than what you hacve is a bruise under the skin. Try some ice on it to reduce the swelling. And do the old dog a favor and help children understand that just like grandma and grandpa can be grouchy because their old bodies hurt, so can dogs.
I've seen way too many times when kids are allowed to all but attack a dog and for some bizarre reason, the adults think it's the dogs fault when they go to protect themselves from their attackers. Hair pulling, ears pulled, eyes poked, pounded on, poked with sticks, things thrown at them... This is not love.

Kids should learn very early on that anything they would not want done to their body is something that an animal also does not want done.

You're lucky you have a chance to teach your child the right way to behave around any animal and maybe your child will help other children to understand this also.

The only issue you need to worrie about isn't an issue. The fact of the matter is this, the only disease your son could get from the dog is rabies, the only way he can get rabies is if the dog has rabies to begin with and your sons skin had to be broken to let the saliva into the blood stream. My suggestion would be to ask if the owners of the dog if he's shots are current. If they are...problem solved. if your still worried, take you son to the doctors. In order to test for rabies you'll need the dog and to be honest, I don't know of any new ways to check for rabies, hopefully there is because the old way is to test the brain of the animal which is certain death for the dog. Lets hope that the shots are current and if not, maybe by now, there's a new way to test. Good luck to you and I hope this helped.

Even if the skin isn't broken I would still wipe his arm down with peroxide and ice it for the swelling. If it gets worse or the pain increases take your son to the doctor.

This dog that you were sitting for, does it have all his shots?
