1200 too much???? Thats insane. Most would burn that and then some in a day of straight sleep, let alone awake and doing normal activities. The person in comma WOULD need that and more, unless he/she were old. I would hope someone would feed me more than that were I in a comma. I am slim, too, by the way. People do eat high calorie food these days, which is the primary cause of obesity, but it is NOT because they eat over 1200 calories. Caloriesperhour.com will help you configure the amount of calories you need to live. It sounds as though you'll be surprised at how many you need. Really, this amazes me.
You must also consider what you burn in a day. You will burn off some of the consumed calories, it is not a one way street. You consume and you burn. What you think you have consumed is usually a little less than what you have because you are burning constantly, even as you sleep. It is recommended you not eat less than 300 calories in each meal. Theres 900 away right there. However, this is a bare minimum per meal, so there ought to be more calorie consumption occuring.

As a rough guideline, recommended daily energy intake values for young adults are: 2500 kcal/d (10 MJ/d, 120 W) for men and 2000 kcal/d (8 MJ/d, 100 W) for women. Children, sedentary and older people require less energy, physically active people more.

It all depends on your body structure, I had a body fat analysis done and at a resting state my body needs 2000 calories just to survive, so to lose weight I would need to eat less than this. But it's different for everyone.

That depends on sex, age, body size, and level of activity. Everyone is different. Too few calories cause the body to "eat itself" and muscle mass is lost as well as fat. Fat is easily replaced and your body thinking it has been starved will store more fat than it would have prior to starvation. Muscle mass is difficult to put on when your diet is restricted, and muscle mass is what helps keep your metabolism high. Low metabolism will also cause weight gain (fat storage).
