You really need to see a doctor to make sure your problem is just IBS and not something more serious. "IBS" should ONLY be diagnosed when they've checked you out completely and found nothing wrong. If it's something like Celiac, which is fairly common, you could be causing damage to your body if you don't treat the underlying cause.
As far as coping with your symptoms, soluble fiber is great. http://www.helpforibs.com is a great site for information about proper use of fiber and controlling IBS through diet. You should also log everything you eat or drink and every symptom you have (even something that may seem unrelated, like tingly fingers or skin problems) and see if you can figure out any patterns.
I'd recommend you check out the IBS message board at WebMD. There's a lot of great info there, and a bunch of people who really know their stuff that can give you advice. http://boards.webmd.com/webx?14@@.5987f421
Other things to try are lots of water, ginger capsules, enteric coated peppermint, chamomile or ginger tea. You can experiment with cutting out dairy, red meat, lower fat, caffeine, soy, processed foods. (It was the processed foods that did it for me - all that hidden MSG)
I really think you should see a doc for testing, but if it's "just IBS" you can control your symptoms without meds - it's just a matter of figuring out what's triggering your symptoms (stress aggravates your troubles, yes, but usually the problem is really somtehing you're eating. It could even be something you've been eating all your life without problems!)
Best of luck!!

The symptoms are typically diet-related, so I would start there.
Make a calendar for the month, and each day record what you eat, and when symptoms arise. After a few weeks, you should start to see a connection between the symptoms and what you eat, so you know which foods to avoid.
Get lots of fiber in you diet as well, I think it is supposed to be like 12grams a day or something.
Also, stress is probably one of the biggest contirubtors; the less stressed you are, the less often sympotms should occur, and they should be less severe.
I would still recommend going to the doctor; mine has me taking 2 different prescriptions, and coupled with everything above, I don't even notice I have it most days.
Hope this helps!

How do you know you have IBS without seeing a doctor? There's more to IBS than just diareaha.
Look at your diet. Are you eating anything that might make you sick? Many people are lactose intolerant and don't know it ... this means cut out milk, cheese, butter, etc totally out of the diet.
Make sure you're getting a balanced diet including fiber. Avoid fast foods.. they're just overproceesed fluff anyway.
I still think yuo need to see a doctor ASAP if this has been going on awhile. It could also be a sign you're sick or have food poisioning.

Look up a registered/licenced massage therapist in your area and call them up. Tell them your situation and ask if they are skilled to help you. It is a great alternative to medication. It may not CURE it, but it will help regulate and ease the uneasiness you exerience.
Helpful Hints:
For Diarehhea=rub your stomach in a circular motions towards your right side
For Constipation=rub your stomach in a circular motion towards your left side
This helps neutralize the natural flow of your bowels.

Try a food exclusion diet, it may just be one thing that's upsetting your system. there is a great book simply called 'Allergy free food' which has in it all the different kind of foods that can be problems and as well as recipes there are suggested exclusion diets.
it may seem like hard work but if you really don't wanna go to the docs surely its worth a try?
good luck tho!

I had it..but it seemed to go away for me, well, not totally, but to a point where i can control it. I just changed the way I ate, and drank alot of water. Also, when I started taking zoloft, it really helped my ibs, because i wasn't stressing out as much.

Often it is something you eat that is a trigger to the bouts. Try detecting what causes you the most problem. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
