I recommend Boston Terriers, Pugs, Poodles ( not the tiny ones) for small to medium dogs.. Golden Retrievers if you want a larger dog..

I have raised many foster children in a home full of dogs, and these dogs are all child friendly..fun, and loyal..

Some friendly, loyal breeds are golden retrievers, labs, and boxers. Golden retrievers are really gentle and do well with kids. Labs are a bit higher-energy, but they are sweet. Boxers are apparently some of the best dogs you can get for kids. They are higher-energy as well.

Whatever kind of dog you do get, make sure that its personality is the kind that you want. There are certain breed traits, but every dog is different, and you want to make sure that you have the one that is best for your family and their energy level and lifestyle. A good way to predict these kind of traits is by meeting both the mother and father of the dog--if you buy from a breeder. It is not a sure way of predicting what the dog will be like, but it may give you some clues as to what to expect in the future.

I would buy a book or check online for ideas. That way you would be able to make the most informed decision.

Do you have a tiny apartment or a big yard?

Do you need the dog to be OK with cats and other small pets (no prey drive)?

Do you have alot of time to spend with the dog? or only a few hours a day?

Do you mind doing maintenance like brushing long hair?

Are your kids tiny? Or large? Some breeds tolerate little kids' roughhousing a bit better.

Do you (or your neighbors) mind a barky-yappy-noisy dog?

My advice is to NOT buy from a pet shop. Even the best breed, if not socialized right, won't be a nice pet Pet shop dogs are bought from puppy mills (larger commercial breeders). Contact a reputable breeder; the AKC may have a list of breeders in your region. Or go to the shelter like I did. I got a wonderful lab X and he's the best dog.

All dogs are loyal. Some are more friendly in temperament. Mixed breeds seem to be friendlier than purebred dogs. Because small dogs are so diminuative, they tend to hide from kids and become nervous, anxious around them and may bite as they age if not trained properly.
What you dont want your pet to do as an adult dog, never allow as a puppy to do, such as bite or growl or bark at any human or other pet!
Check out the breeds youre interested and they should list people temperament as well.
Good luck in finding a new member of your pack. ;)

I must say that I have 2 English Bulldogs & just had a litter of pups. My bulldogs are great with my kids & when we take them out & about everyone just loves to pet them. They are great with my kids & the kids can do just about whatever they want to them & the dogs never get mad. Also they require very little to hardly any exercise. If you want a dog that just loves to be loved without having to worry about taking him/her on walks everyday then this is the dog for you. They can play with the kids & when the kids are done, the dog is done. They are also "small" enough to keep in the house. Hope this helped. Good Luck!!!!

You have a lot of options here. I have a lhasa apso, shes little enough but not too small. She weighs about 15 pounds and she is the sweetest dog I've ever seen in my life. She has never bitten anyone and gets along great with other animals.

Golden Retrievers(sp) are also really loyal dogs, I heard a story where one saved two little girls (his owners daughters) from two pit bulls, thats loyalty.

A Rottweiler(sp) is a really good option if its not too big. They have a high pain tollerance so if the little ones accidently hurt him, he won't mind. They are great with kids and very loyal and very very smart.

Also a German Shepherd is a good dog. Again, they are great with kids and very loyal and easy to train.

There are a lot of websites you can go to, I'll list them for you.

I hope these help you make your choice! The most important thing to having a great dg is to give it a lot of love. A dog will always love you back no matter what. Good Luck!

I think the golden retriever is the best dog for a family...with children big or small. Mine is protective, yet very, very playful and friendly. I've heard labs are good family dogs, too. Goldens have so much love to give!

Breeds like Labs and Golden Retrievers (and mixed breeds that are part lab or golden) are reliable, intelligent, and easily trained. They have a good track record of being well mannered even tempered dogs. Dogs do have individual personalities, so you have to actually spend some time with a dog to know how it will be. A good place to check is your local shelter or pet rescue organization.
