My friend (who i share cigarettes and drinks with all the time) just found out that he has mono...I'm assuming i'm going to get it considuring the amount of time we spend together, so how long will it take for the symptoms to start showing up? Is there a blood test i can take to find out if I have the virus even before symptoms start showing up?

I know this because my best friend's daughter has mono and our children spend alot of time together so I found out all that I could. Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and has a 6 week incubation period. Symptoms can be, but are not limited to, sore throat, headache, fatigue, rash, and abdominal pain. A blood test is not effective until 6 weeks after exposure. Hope this helps!!

The causative virus can be in the body 30-50 days before an infected person develops symptoms.

If you drank from his cup or took a drag off of his cigarette, you can get mono. It is very contagious. If the symptoms rear their ugly head you will have to see a doctor and they will have to do the blood test. It can show itself 4 to 6 weeks after exposure.
