York of course.
"Oh the merry Duke of York
He had Ten Thousand Men
He marched them up to the Top of the Hill
And He marched them down again.

York is very old and there are the walls and the Cathedral as well as old buildings but I think I would go for Liverpool. It isn't as old but there is a lot to see with many museums about the slave trade and things as well as more modern things to see, like The Cavern, where the Beatles first played. It has two Cathedrals and you could visit either Liverpool or Everton football grounds (though if you want to go inside you would have to find out about how.

I haven't been to Newcastle, Manchester or Liverpool .
-- but I really enjoyed York for it's medieval character, walls, Catherdral and other attractions. I drove from York to Edinburgh in one day taking a very leisurely pace and route. It's a four hour drive if you don't stop anywhere on the way.

Really depends what you're looking for. But I'd say either York for its history or Manchester for its buzz.

It has to be Manchester.
It has everything, history, culture, nightlife, good food and the greatest football club in the world (Manchester United).
What more could you want?
