I bug him for one, but he says no! what age is good for a child to ahve a cat or dog. he wont budge for a smaller pet either, only a fish. I want her to have a pet she could pet/touch.

Could he have another reason for not wanting one? Could it be the way he was raised? My husband never had a cat until we got married. He said he didn't like them. Well, that was all on his mother. When he told his family we were going to have a baby they expected us to get rid of the cat. "The cat", Harry, is now 10 years old. My husband loves him and our 4 children love him. My husband likes cats better than dogs now.
Talk to your husband. Tell him that you want a kitten for your birthday. What would happen if you brought a pet home? What would happen if you told him you were going to keep the pet because it's what you want? He's had his way for a long time, now it is your turn.
By the way our cat has never hurt the kids. They pick him they o pulled his tail when they were babies and they laid on him. He's a good cat.

Honestly, I have to tell you that you will be the caretaker of any pet you ever get, kids may mean well, but it will be up to you to make sure the feeding, walking, or catbox cleaning, vet visits and mess pickups are all in your ballpark Mom. Small dogs are nippier than big ones, and to me more apt to nip small kids just to protect themselves from the sudden movements that kids do. I think the best dogs for kids in terms of temperment is the Golden Retriever, but they like plenty of action till they are 2 or 3 years old.
I don't think your husband likes animals and he will never be happy with a shedding creature. It just seems to be some people lack that need. In general though, I would say 4 is a good age to spend time with a dog while being old enough to understand that you can't drag it, dress it or take food or toys from it. Cats, that I'm not sure of, they never seem to like young children anyway.

Growing up my mom wouldn't let me have any pets. I hated her for it. I wanted a pet so bad.
One day my brother who was 12 years older than me brought me home a pet. It was in a cage and covered with a towel and said beware of taranchula. I didn't dare look at what was inside in.
When he got up he showed me what it was. It was a lab rat that he saved from the university of michigan. he didn't want to experiment on it and so he took it home.
That was my first pet. I loved it so much. My mom was so mad though. It was like it took a lot to take care of.
I would never do that to my children. Right now we have a five year old and a new born and we have a yellow lab, three cats and a chinchilla plus fish. The animals don't mess with the baby and my five year old loves all her animals. They make for great compnaions.
And actaully, my five year old just started kindergarten and cries not to g every day until we had the dog start walking with her. Now she is excited to walk the dog in the morning. And doesnt cry to stay home. So our dog is hleping.

I think he is being reasonable, although you may not want to hear that. A cat or dog is a huge responsibility and a lot of money (food, & vets..etc.). I'm pretty sure you have your hands full already....as I have a 2 year old also....a HANDFUL! Even when she gets older, pets are great, but usually the responsibility falls back on the parent(s). I'd say let her admire them at your friends/relatives house until you are ready to take on that extra responsibility!

Your daughter will not take care of a pet for it's entire life. No kid will. They get bored and the novelty eventually wears off. If she wants a pet now, I think it's a great time to start teaching her about being responsible. As long as you are ready to assume most of the caretaking duties on a regular basis, it is wonderful to have a pet. Just tell the hubby that you will take care of whatever pet it is and he shouldn't have a problem with it.

U should try adopting a kitten. And u and ur husband should talk it out. Ive had many cats before they were all good with kids and me( im 12). Infact the cat i have now loves cuddling and belly rubs. If not a cat then i would not suggest a small rodent because small chidren dont know that they can injure it. I suggest a dog and not to small cause ive seen small children play rough with small dogs. Tell ur husband that animals teach children responsibility, freidship, and caring and knowing to love something.

Kids will never be old enough to take true care of a family pet. Kids will love it and consider the pet their pet, but when college or some other fun type vacation they will expect the parents to take over. Take your husband to a pet store to hold a small puppy. He might melt when he holds this small one pound puppy. Make this a family pet and let him and your daughter research breeds and names for the new puppy.
All breeds have different personifies and you will need to fine on that fits your families life style.

3-4 is a good time for a small dog, one that is kid friendly. I had a dog from the time I was 3 and I had her until I was 17, and it was a great learning experience to take care of a pet. My husband was mad last week when my sister gave us her pet rabbit, but our 2 year-old son already named her, and he loves to brush her coat.

If you wait that long to get a pet, you'll be waiting until she is 25 years old. My 14,11 and 6 year olds thought the cats were great--for the 1st few weeks, but now could care less.

Something that I found out about pets is that the novelty wears off rather quickly for the kids. The question to ask is, do YOU want a pet. If your kids are older, you could be having empty cradle syndrome. I had it for several months after having four kids.
Good luck.
