I'm not sure what the best thing is to feed my puppy and how much.
The pet store had him on NutroMax puppy formula, so that is what has been on. But, I wasn't sure if there is something better.
Also, they only told me to feed him 1/3 cup twice a day. I read the bag and it says 3/4 to 1 1/4 cups per day. So, I have been giving him 1/3 cup four times a day because it is like I cannot fill him up. All he wants to do is eat. Everytime he walks by the cupboard his food is in, he sits and wait for me to feed him. I don't want to over feed him, but I also don't want to starve him.
He is just under 4 months and he is right around 7 pounds, probably still a little under.
Thanks again!

I agree, the best thing is to talk to your vet.
As far as NutroMax... That is what my puppy was on originally as well. My vet told me that it is better for the coat than it is for the insides of the dog. While I want my puppy to look good, the most important thing is his health. My vet said just about any other food is going to be better for them. According to him, all pet food companies tend to stretch the truth a little on the benefits they provide, but NutroMax tends to do it a little more. So, we went with Purina Puppy Chow and my puppy loved it. Just be sure you slowly introduce him to the food, don't just switch him. Start by putting a small amount of the new food in with the Nutro. Don't give him extra food, the same amount, but pepper in a little of the new food. As you go on, start putting a little more of the new food in each time. Eventually you will have more of the new food and less of the old. Keep doing this until the Nutro is gone. Just be sure to watch for any signs of problems when switching your puppy.
As far as how much. It is best to go by the bag. But, my vet always told me you may have to adjust a little for your dog. If you think he is still hungry, just give him a little extra. Just be sure not to over feed him. Again, it will probably be best to talk to your vet.
Good luck

I worked at a pet store and we used NutroMax. Its a good brand. I had a dachshund and he would eat and eat. Dogs are just that way. They will eat all the time. Not all dogs are that way, but a lot are. I would feed him the amount that it says on the bag. I wouldnt feed him anymore, because he will just become over weight. If he begs for more food, don't give it to him. He will beg everytime you have food out.
Because he is a growing pup is also why he wants to eat a lot. Once he puts some weight on he may start to eat less.
If you choose to change the brand of dog food in the future, gradually mix the new food into the old. So he can gradually get used to it and not get sick. I hope this was so help. Have fun with the new pup!

We have had mix breed dogs and purebred Field Spaniels over the past 19 years. Most of our pets had skin problems linked with food allergies. In the beginning we used either Iams or Eukanuba. At the suggestion of our vet, we changed them to Nutromax Lamb & Rice formula. Within 2 weeks of changing the food completely (4 weeks total counting the time it took to mix the brands and wean from the old brand to avoid stomach upset), their coats began to shine, flakes disappeared and all itching stopped. Additionally, one mixbreed dog was a "lunatic" behaviorally before changing foods. After being on NutroMax, she calmed down significantly (probably due to not being irritated by skin problems). Finally, for quite a few years, other manufacturers were using Ethoxyquin as a preservative (some still do). Ethoxyquin has been linked to serious cancers of the liver and other vital organs. NutroMax was one of a handful of companies that did not use this chemical - rather, they used Vitamin E (tocopherols) to preserve their dry food. We have had many friends who have switched food to NutroMax at our suggestion. Without fail, the majority of skin and coat problems disappeared within 1-2 months of switching. It's a superior food! My only wish is that it would be available in grocery stores as a convenience.

Nutro in general is good food, they make a natural choice one too. The thing you want to look for in a dog food is the ingrediants. The first ingreadiant should say a meat and the word meal after it like chicken meal, or lamb meal. If it says by-products(the beack and feet ext.) or just the meat part like chicken or lamb (this is every thing meat and beak) then you don't want it. You also don't want the first ingreadiant to be a filler like corn.
never feed your pets a food you can buy in a reg grocery store.
Watch just asking your vet, sometimes they can be partial to saying what reps tell them, and they don't always do their research. Read the bags youself and see what you think. As far as petstores go there are a lot that don't know what they are talking about. I would go to petsmart. The people there are very knowledgable and will help you pick what you think is best. But I would stay with the food he's on, he seems to like it and its a good food.
As far as how much to feed him, you should be fine just leaving a full bowl out for him. Most dogs will not overeat. Overweight dogs are usually that way due to what they are eating not how much. I wouldn't worry about measuring unless the dog seems to have no control and you feel it will lead to a weight issue.

I like nutromax because it has less additives than other foods. My rottie had skin allergies, and was diabetic. The people at Nutromax worked with me on both issues, providing me with alot of information to help me get his blood sugar under control.
If you do decide to change brands, remember not to do it abruptly. You will need to mix the two foods together gradually until you are left with only the new food. Otherwise your puppy might get runny stools.

Nutiromax is decent food, Science Diet is even better. Don't listen to the pet store people as they are usually inexperienced. Take your pup to the vet for a check up and shots and do what the Vet recommends. If you do not plan on taking it to the vet follow the directions on the bag of food.
