My 9 yr old son had a fit about going to school today because his brother was sick and staying home. I had to get him dressed. As he fought with me not sitting still and crying. What kind of punishment would you hand out and why?

I would take away something that he likes when he gets home from school and make him do something he doesn't like. For example, if he normally watches a certain tv show after school or cartoons or something, tell him that he can't and then make him sit down and do some reading or math problems or something educational that he probably won't really like.

First, I'd explain why his brother stayed home and he didn't. Say, "Your brother stayed home today because he was sick. You are not sick. You didn't need to stay home".
Second, say, "I did not apprieciate how you acted this morning and it did not make it any easier to take care of your brother that is sick".
Third, for a punishment, take away something that he likes. For example, no video games, no playing with friends, no T.V. That should last about 5 days to 1 week. Make sure he knows why he is being punished. Say, "You're old enough to know how to behave, and this morning, you were NOT behaving correctly. Next time, instead of fussing, just go on and continue getting ready for school".
I hope this helps you out!

Withholding priveleges works wonders with my 8 year old, such as computer time, tv time, playing with friends, etc. But also explain to him why you are doing it, mutual respect, acting like a 9 year old and respecting your decisions. Good luck.

frist did he get his way as long as you sent him to school, next time he will know not to waste his tears on staying at home cause he is going to school. Just tell him that when he is not sick, he's going to school

I'd take away a privilege for a day or 2.
