In St. John chapter 1, the scriptures say, And the Word was. Here people acknowledge that the Word is Christ but why is the word "word" used.

God's word is the manifestation of his will.

The Word, in this context is Truth in its purest and most complete form. Later in John 14:6, Jesus says "I am the way and the truth and the light."

He is the truth in that everything he says is truth.

I'm assuming your talking about John 1. If you look into the greek the word in greek there is LOGOS... which means --

something said (including the thought); by implication a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty) or motive; by extension a computation; specifically (with the article in John) the Divine Expression (that is, Christ): - account, cause, communication, X concerning, doctrine, fame, X have to do, intent, matter, mouth, preaching, question, reason, + reckon, remove, say (-ing), shew, X speaker, speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, tidings, treatise, utterance, word, work.

When trying to find an English word to sum up the vast concept of Logos the word WORD works well but it some what limited. It happens alot actually. Greek words often have entire concepts behind them and sometimes it's about finding the best possible word to sum up that concept - a difficult task. It's a good Idea to use something like the Strongs dictionary... or others that will tell you the complete definition for a word. It helps ya out alot knowing the whole story.

For example ... at the end of the Gospel of John ... Jesus asks Peter 3 times if he Loves him. Now at first it looks like Jesus is being redundant and it doesn't make much sense. But if you look in the greek you'll see that where english has one word for Love, Greek has at least 4 words.... one for brotherly loyal love, one for Godly Love, one for romantic love and the natural love of a parent for their child. So when you look at that scripture again you can see more specifically what Jesus was asking Peter.

If you look at www.blueletterbible.com they have a good dictionary/concordance on there. But it can get a bit confusing to use. The best I found... www.e-sword.net go to that site you can down load the program for free. It comes with the king james with the strongs (each word is assigned a number so you can look up EVERY Word) and it has HUNDREDS of free modules for other versions of scripture different dictionaries or commentaries even free books... GREAT FUN!!!!
God bless you and give you hunger and knowledge of his Word!

A Greek philosopher named Heraclitus first used the term Logos around 600 B.C. to designate the divine reason or plan which coordinates a changing universe. This word was well suited to John's purpose in John 1.

The original text of the New Testament was written in Greek. The Greek word that was translated for that word "word" is "logos" and refers to words that are spoken or declared word as opposed to written.

All of the translations we currently have access to in English stick to the same rules that were applied in the 1600's with the King James version. Almost every English translation does not violate the standard that was set forth with the King James (also known as the Authorized version). The text of the King James is not direct from the Greek. The first progression was there was a translation from Greek to Latin (the Latin Vulgate), then the King James was translated from the Latin to English.

My pastor, Mark Spitsbergen, has been researching the ancient Greek language that the New Testament was written in for a number of years. As he continues to research, he has applied himself to a translation that is a word-for-word, literal translation that is directly from the Greek, and when he does something that differs from the Authorized version he gives an explanation as to how he arrived at his conclusion to translate the way he did.

This is a direct quote from the footnotes of his John 1 translation, posted on www.abidingplace.org:

[2] The Greek word ‘logos,’ takes on a new dimension of meaning by its association with the Eternal God who was made flesh. The usage of logos here is that of a title instead of an act. Hebrews 11:3 refers to the action of God speaking wherein “the world was framed by the word (rhema) of God.” The Hebrew equivalent for ‘logos’ is ‘emrah’ which is used for the word of God in the Torah as in Deuteronomy 33:9, and ‘davar’ which is used as the spoken word of God as in Exodus 4:28. The use of the Word as a title may imply the revelation of God. The title given to Jesus Christ as the Word is not limited to a revelation at the time of redemption for the Word is not only eternally existing in the past as God and with God but also in the future as is revealed in Revelation 19:13, “his name is called the Word (logos) of God” The Authorized Version renders it – word 218, saying 50, account 8, speech 8, Word (Christ) 7, thing 5, not tr 2, misc 32 times. It is found in the Septuagint 1239 times and its Hebrew equivalent is “ ’emrah.” The first occurrence in the Old Testament is in Genesis 4:23 and in the New Testament, Matthew 5:32

There's a few reasons. For one, Jewish theology put a lot of emphasis on the "Word of God" as in "the word of the LORD came unto..." in Gen 15:1, 15:4, Jer 43:8, Eze 6:1 etc.

Also, Plato had built up a theology based on the Word of God, and John may have wanted to capture some of those thoughts.

The spoken word is very powerful on a spiritual level. When we
say the spirit that lived as Jesus was the first living thing. On a spiritual level, all living things are ONE. So the first life created when God SPOKE, the Morning Stars, which Jesus said he was
one of, (Revelation), at the end of the book. We can also call Him
the WORD.

"Word" refers to the "Logos" of God. Understand we have the written Word (the Bible). We have the spoken Word (God's revelation to man). And we have the Living Word - Logos (Jesus Christ. We know this is referring to Christ because in the same chapter (John 1) it says the "Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, full of grace and truth." There is no relation to the Logos spoken of by Aristotle. God Bless you.

Bible Study Tract: What is the Word of God?

I Want to be Healed is available in PDF format and Word document format. You can find our permission to print these pamphlets at the Participatory Study Series index.

This tract presents the an outline of how scripture is produced from God's message through the prophet and finally to inclusion in the canon of scripture. It is designed to be printed on 8 1/2 x 14 paper and folded in four.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Word was in the beginning; the Word was with God and the Word was God. Right at the beginning He was with God. All things came into existence through Him.
- John 1:1-3a

What is the primary function of the Word of God?

Creation.

Genesis 1 emphasizes this and reemphasizes it by showing God speaking, and whatever God speaks, becomes so. Psalm 33:6-9 makes this explicit.

Psalm 104 first emphasizes the power of God's spoken Word (Psalm 104:7), and then the continuing nature of God's creative activity. Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:1-3; 14), the ultimate form of God's message to humanity (Hebrews 1:1-3).

Even salvation is an example of God's creative power in action, this time through the Word made flesh. "Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new." - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (CEV).

What does the teaching that everything is created by the Word of God imply about the natural world?

While we cannot get the same information from studying nature that we can through God's revealed Word in scripture and through the gift of prophecy, we can get truth which comes from studying the Word of God in action.

When we engage in scientific study truthfully and honestly, we are studying the Word of God. We can approach it with prayer, reverence, and an openness to what God wants us to learn.

What ways other than examining creation give us access to the Word of God?

In the past God has spoken to us in many ways. He has sent angels (Genesis 18), He has spoken directly (Genesis 22, Exodus 19:16-25), He has given visions (Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6, Acts 10) and dreams (Matthew 2:19 & 20), and through direct prophetic utterances.

Many of these are recorded in the Bible and throughout Christian history.

What acts of inspiration or Holy Spirit guidance are required to make a piece of writing Scripture?

Someone must receive the Word from the Lord. Listeners must then receive that communication as a Word. Without the inspiration of the listeners, the Word cannot become scripture.

It must then be passed to the broader community-other churches, synagogues or other centers of worship. Further, it must be found to be applicable over a long period of time.

There is no single set of characteristics of the original writing. A great variety of types of literature have become scripture. Some of the historical books of the Bible, such as Kings and Chronicles, bear evidence that they were written based on existing chronicles. The writer researched, compiled and organized his material.

All of this happens under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

How does a message get identified as the Word of God?

When the body of Christ (the church universal) receives scripture as authoritative, then it becomes scripture. No single group or denomination can make new scripture. They may have Word(s) from the Lord, but those do not have the authority of the Bible without the acceptance of the whole body.
