It is a dog watering bottle (21/2 gallons) and I was just wondering if there was a way to remove the algae without buying a new bottle.

bleach water is the best way but you have to declorinate it, to do this go to a petstore in the fish department and get water clarifyer like stress coat. Fill it with water and a capful of bleach and let sit untill clean or use a toothbrush diped in bleach water. Then dump, refill with water and a capful or two of the water clarifyer. Let this sit for twice as long as it did to clean it with bleach or 30 min to an hour. Then dump and rinse very well.
to prevent this from happening again try cleaning out bottle once a week with dish soap and sponge.

Vinegar. It will kill the algae. Scrub with a bottle brush. Rinse it many times with water.

Vinegar is good for killing any plant life, but is non-toxic. The soil recovers from it and it won't harm your dog if a little residue stays in the bottle.

Got plants poking up in the cracks of your sidewalk? Vinegar. Got an ant hill you want gone? Vinegar. Need to clean the filters for your humidifier? Vinegar.

Get one of those brushes that you can fit in the bottle that's long enough to reach the inner walls. Scrub with soapy water. Rinse again with bleach/water mix. Rinse again with clean water thoroughly, very thoroughly. Next, keep the water bottle out of direct sunlight and you won't get algae again.

Clorox and then of course rince. Then keep the water bucket/bottle out of the sun.
The algae buildup is a 100 times faster with sunlight.

Try putting a little bleach in it and shake and pour it out. That will kill anything bad in the water bottle.

Bleach it, just rinse it out good afterwards, maybe with some vinegar and water to get rid of any bleach smell, it will be fine.

PLEASE DON'T USE BLEACH! no matter how well you rinse, if you use too much - and any mre than a drop is too much - it may damage the plastic and actually seep in. use a 50/50 mix of HOT water and WHITE vinegar. (the mix works well to clean water coolers also!) then rinse& repeat if necessary.
