What, do you not think that we secularists are just as appalled? Newsflash...Atheists, like me are homeschooling too.
Homeschooling is a great option because it works for so many people. I don't have to worry about my children getting shot at school because they are home schooled but they are not home schooled because of school shootings. Nope, we live in a city where murders take place outside of the school so we really do get to 'live on the edge' despite my children not being in school. See there, my children don't need to go to school to face danger, it is in our city while we shop, sit at the traffic light, go to the video store, movies, park, beach, or even (GASP!!!) are home!
All of you who keep insisting on acting as if you "know" that homeschooling children is sheltering them and not preparing for the real world and that they will be socially inept are using a straw-man fallacy. Your argument is nothing but a generalization based on opinions, you have absolutely zero substantiated proof; none, nada, zilch and it is ignorant to keep spouting off your nonsense as if it were fact.
BTW...The questioner didn't say "applaud" as in "HOORAY! Woo-hoo" but "appalled" (questioner spelled it wrong) as in "DISGUSTED" with something.

I'm an education major and I actually just got done taking a class where this was a major topic. Where you child goes to school should depend on the individual child. You want to send your student to where they can develop the most. If you feel that the public schools in your area are not sufficient enough then don't send your student there. A lot of public schools in America are not doing too well so I can definitely understand your worry. Private schools may or may not work, sometimes parents can't afford them or don't believe in what they may stand for. Home schooling can be very successful for some, although others may argue that it keeps them from developing socially or having a sense of self. If you're afraid of you student lacking friends get them involved in some kind of activity, or camps, most communities offer a bunch of things for kids to do. Students are all different and should go to school where you think they can do their best. Some do better in public while others do better in homeschool, that's why they are all offered. There is no right or wrong way, just each persons individual belief.

Homeschooling is a great option even if there were no shootings anywhere.
Public school and home school is not something to be "believed in". Education is not a god. Neither is it a master over us.
You can believe that something exists but to put your faith into a system or a process of education is rather scary.
My children are homeschooled. It isn't that I "believe in homeschooling". It is that I believe that homeschooling is a way to provide a proper and sound education. I don't have a wishy-washy hopeful "maybe type" trust in the method --- I KNOW that home-schooling is a good plan because I've seen the results.
Many children that learn at home have proven themselves to be intelligent, hardworking, pleasant and contributing citizens in communities around the world. Not all home-educated children succeed. It isn't the method that works -- it has to be the children that do the work.
Many public school students prove themselves to also be high in intelligence, hardwork, kindness and contributions to society. And NOT all public school children do so well. MANY are hindered by the obstacles with which the current public system is encumbered.
School at home is a way to remove many of those obstacles. (obstacles=issues).

Yes. But not because of the shootings only. There are a lot of things being put in your kids heads that you'll probably never know about. Just because they don't get a bullet in their head doesn't mean that public school is not dangerous for them.
I freely admit, I'm biased. But that does not mean that what I say is unfair.
I believe that homeschoolers have more oportunities to excel than do public schoolers. They have a less distracted environment, and someone who really cares what happens to them teaching them.

I am a Christian parent. We do not applaud sick, perverted, people who damage children. We pray for those left behind and for the souls of others who would use such disasters as an opportunity to soapbox. Seems some people need the scapegoats.
Home schooling is a great option for those who can do it right. Many children who go through it are actually ahead of others the same age. This is due to "one on one" instruction.
Personally, I still believe in public schools. I believe that is the only way to expose children to true social interaction. Schools are much more than the 3R's.

I think it is becomming a big issue. I am not a parent, I am a kid. I don't think that's the only reason you should homeschool your child, I mean for heaven's sake, just because there's shootings, heck there's more likely to be a shooting in your house then there is a school.
I am christian and proud of it. It is easier to be a christian at home then at school. I agreee.
It's all up to one's opinon. I'm "appauled" too, there used to be none and there's been plenty reccently!

As a public school student, I'd say yes. Not only are shootings getting too common, but if only parents knew every detail of their child's day at school. The people there are so unchristian like. Not all, but too many. Not a good environment for someone trying to do good.

I already do think homeschooling is a great option. And that was before something as serious as a school shooting.

They applauded the shootings? I shake my head at the close minded Christian parents.
No I don't think homeschooling is always a way to go, unless the parent is a trained teacher. Yes it can happen anywhere, but even home-schooled kids can go to the playground, store or bank and get heaven forbid shot. Unless of course the parents keep them in a plastic bubble their whole life.

NO! I still believe in public schools and I think that is the way to go. We are not going to stop doing what we do just because there are crazy people that run around this world. All of my brothers and myself went to a public schools that had several things happen while we were there. Once there was this man that ran into campus because he was running away from the police. We were in lock down for several hours until they found him. Another time I was in the band and we went to play at my brothers high school football game with the band and there was a shooting at the end of the game, I cried and was scared but I still went the next day to school and my brother continued to attend his high school.
We need to continue with our lives and try to always be alert of what is going around us. If it's going to be our time then it will be but until it is my time I will continue to do what I do and not let any crazy people stop me from it.
