An EIT is usually obtained right out of college. To get it, you have to pass the FE test, which is a monster and covers everything from thermodynamics, to economics to calculus to beams and kinetics. The main reason to take it is so that you can later take the PE exam.

The PE is registration by the state. Mosts states require eight years of experience before you can sit for the exam. Four of those years can be getting your degree from an accredited university.

The reason to get the PE is that you can then be the engineer of record. It is especially important in civil engineering. All reports, grading and construction drawings have to be stamped by a PE.

To do any structural work, you have to be registered also.
