Does anyone really do this? I mean, what in the world do you think you're going to get?

Also, has it ever occurred to you that if a person can't afford decent, bottled liquor, he or she shouldn't be drinking?

The truth of the matter is that plastic can have many less impurities than glass, so plastic can preserve the "pristine" flavor of your 12 yr. Glen Livet much better, and I find that when my brown paper bag gets soggy and the bottle drops thru the bottom, the plastic bottles sometimes bounce right back into my 3-wheels-working shopping cart. :-) (hiccup)

I sure do and I notice no difference in the taste between being packaged in glass or plastic.

1st of all, Like someone above me mentioned, many different types of liquors that are high quality come in plastic.
Many bars buy lare quantities of plastic bottled liquor and just refill the glass bottles that are behind the bar---less cost that way.

2nd, if you attend any major sporting event, glass containers are not allowed. Cruzan Rum makes 4 paks of different flavored margaritas that are EXCELLENT. The are actually flask shaped but are a little taller and fit well in a small soft sided cooler.

3rd, If I have been drinking and reach up on my shelf to get a bottle of Jack down and have a clumsy moment, I prefer the bottle to bounce and not shatter. Trying to lick liquor up from the floor with shards of glass mixed in is not a fun time, even though the liquor would clean the cuts in your mouth.....

So, I guess it is just mainly personal preference.

First let me say that your question is asked really really poorly. Especially the last part.....because it is all a matter of personal preference. What makes a bottle of booze decent? You might say you like Stoli or Grey Goose and I might think that anything besides Chopin tastes like piss. Sames goes for Gin, Rum, Bourbon, Tequilla...hell, even beer.

I like a nice bottle of booze as much as the next guy, but there certainly is a time and a place for cheap booze. If I am headed to a tailgate before a game you better believe I'm comin' with a bottle of cheap vodka (probbaly Shmirnoff)....reason being is that all anyone is going to do is mix it with oj or bloody mary mix probably thrown into a plastic cup trying to rid the headache from the night before. No way am I going to waste the money on a bottle of high end vodka that no one is going to appreciate. I'll save that for a party where I know people are going to have it on the rocks and enjoy it.

Lastly, the bum that lives under the bridge by my place in the city drinks nothing but Thunderbird or maybe an occasional Mad Dog 20/20, both of those are glass bottles and aren't offered in plastic. And yeah, I'm sure he thinkings he should be drinking.

Not all hard liquor that comes in a plastic container has to be the cheap McCormick's off brand.

There are several companies that market large quantities and small quantities in plastic bottles for safety considerations.

For instance:
Some 'airplane-sized' bottles
Some 375ml bottles (I believe I've seen Schmirnoff)
Some 1.75L bottles

However, I never claimed that any of these were "decent" - but they are definately not the cheapest.

Most of the highest end spirits come in glass. This is a prestige and tradition thing. Even great winemakers are experimenting with new forms of packaging, including screw-top bottles.

While glass is definitely a nice thing to have, it has its drawbacks. For one thing, it weighs a lot, and that adds to the cost of shipping, which means we pay more, and get nothing more out of it. Have you ever seen a $100 bottle of Scotch shatter? It'll bring tears to your eyes.

Second, glass is less recyclable than plastic, simply because glass can be turned into fewer products.

Plastics have come a long way, and although most are oxygen permiable (leading to some staling issues) they are far more neutral than in years past. Most consumers use their distillates pretty quickly, so this isn't much of an issue.

How many times have you had a party, serving spirits from a bottle.... into plastic glasses?

Personally, I prefer to save some money, and get the clink from real serving glasses instead of the bottles on the shelf.

Yes sure do, I mix my drinks. When I am drinking it is for a reason and the liquor in plastic works just like the other kind not in plastic. I do buy the more expensive brands on occasion, but since it is mixed why waste the money. Also who or why do you think you are the judge over anyone else and can say what is decent? Grow up and see what the real world is like, one man's junk is anothers gold!!

It really depends on what you're going to do with said liquor...

If I was going to drink said liquor straight, you definitely want a quality product in a quality container (i.e. glass). You don't see single-malt scotches in plastic bottles...

But if you're going to mix the liquor, especially if it's vodka (which, if made in the US, must be tasteless and odorless), cheap is generally fine. The main exception here is gin, where quality always matters.

My boyfriend's whiskey of choice is Segrams 7 and he buys it by the half gallon and those are plastic. So, yes, people do actually "do this"...and are very happy!!
