having been born into a cult group and made the cathartic life choice that it wasn't for me i think that the answer has to lie in
a - what is being taught compared to what ought to be taught
b - how people are treated compared to how people ought to be treated
c - how the bible is treated (IF the group claim to be christian)
a religious cult is a group that claims affiliation to a particular religion but its teachings differ significantly to that religion. hence Christianity started life as a Jewish cult before breaking away and forming its own separate identity
similar could be said for Islam in relation to Judaism and Christianity too.
as for Hinduism there are plenty of offshoots that club together under that one title

Scientology is one, about 25 minutes from me...that is a cult. Any church that holds its members captive is a cult. Any church that serves cool aid is most likely a cult.

The only difference between a cult and a "religion" is popularity.
They both use brainwashing techniques to get their followers to believe in irrational things.

I agree with Hot Tamm. Southern Baptist that I know will cuss, drink and especially steal. Because they are "saved" and their minister said it was okay. Then they will berate other churches and gossip and ridicule things they know nothing about. My experience is when I find a Souther Baptist living near me. I buy bigger and better locks.

According to my definition all faiths are irrelevant until proven true. Since all merely assert divine revelation they cannot demonstrate, I see none as other than a waste of time.

Most religious people are too egotistical and subjective to even understand your question.
