I think "I love you" is often said without deeper consideration of the meaning of the word, Although words on their own are just labels, it's the meaning that is attached to each word that constitutes it's value, this meaning is different to each individual,

so if a child is scratched by a cat then chances are they will conjure a bad feeling when they hear that word in future, where if a child remembers cuddling a cute kitten and it purring, then they will feel content when they hear the word,

with that in mind Love means so many things to each individual, so someone may use the saying to express that they are happy, whereas another may say it to be possesive or even because they feel it's expected.

Then you have the universal meaning of a word, the meaning which is generally accepted by a majority of society, to me the meaning of true Love is not only good feelings but bad,

I don't think you can truly say you love someone unless you have seen not only the best, but also the worst and can still truly say you love, trust and respect this person and still want to spend eternity with them because they have shown patience, understanding, acceptance, given effort, kind and at times much needed harsh words and shown you their true soul, so that they give you so much more than just "I love you's"

IMO being in love means that the other person's welfare is more important than your own. You want to see them happy.

Somehow it feels that your life isn't quite right or complete without them in it.

You want to be a better person so that they'll be proud of you.

You want to share things, both good and bad, with them.

You would never think of lying or cheating on them.

Hope this helps.

There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me and that is the word LOVE itself holds the answer.......

(L)isten: and validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.
