Grits is a type of maize porridge and a food common in the Southern United States, and southern Manchuria (where it is called gezi in Mandarin) consisting of coarsely ground corn, traditionally by a stone mill. The results are passed through screens, with the finer part being corn meal, and the coarser being grits. Many communities in the Southern U.S. had a gristmill until the mid-20th century, with families bringing their own corn to be ground, and the miller retaining a portion of the corn for his fee. Grits aficionados still prefer stone ground grits, although modern commercial milling companies prefer other methods.
The word "grits" comes from Old English grytta meaning a coarse meal of any kind. Yellow grits include the whole kernel, while white grits use hulled kernels. Grits are prepared by simply boiling into a porridge; normally they are boiled until enough water evaporates to leave them semi-solid. They are traditionally served at breakfast, but can also be used at any meal.
Personally I can't stand 'em, but the americans seem to serve them everywhere.

My very favorite way to eat grits is cheese grits - I also just like plain grits with some butter, salt, pepper and crumbled bacon it them - yummy!
Cheese Grits recipe for you:
6 cups water
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups grits
1/2 cup butter
3 eggs, well beaten
16 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
2 to 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
cayenne pepper to taste
Bring water and salt to a rolling boil; gradually stir in grits with fork. Cook, stirring constantly, until all water is absorbed. Stir in butter a tablespoon at a time; stir in the beaten eggs, working quickly so eggs will not cook before thoroughly blended into the grits, then stir in the shredded cheese, garlic and a little cayenne pepper.
Put into a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes.
Serves 8.

I am from Knoxville Tennesse, where grits are very popular. The other guys have already told you what grits are, now I'll tell ya'll how to eat 'em. Cook your eggs over medium, with the yellow runny. Chop up the eggs in your cooked grits. Salt, pepper and lots of butter! It is really good. Some people like grits with sugar and butter, sort of like hot cereal, such as cream of wheat. I prefer if with eggs.

Grits are basically dried corn, looks a little like semolina!! Americans eat alot of grits, especially for breakfast with eggs. You can add all sorts of things to grits, including butter, cheese, gravy!!

Yes i do ----- grit are made from corn and its a kind of like mush (meal that has been boiled with butter pinch of salt the consistenly should be thick but not stiff )

My wife is from Northwest Ohio - what she calls grits, I call Goetta (a pork sausage made with pin oats). It's not just her either, I hear it often up that way!
