The only way to save rain water is to build a flat surface for it to fall on that has a drain somewhere on it leading to a large tank. This is called a cistern and its how farms collect and save rain water. The only problem for residential areas is that you would need a very large flat surface to collect enough to amount to anything, and then you would need to keep it chlorinated in the tank to keep bacteria from growing in it until you were ready to use it.

Either one of two different ways. 1) Like they used to do when I was a young boy in the country, with a rain barrel to catch water coming off of the roof, or 2) Like they do in Bermuda. They have roofs specially designed to catch all of the rainwater that falls, it is channeled through pipes/conduits into a large underground holding tank. Hence, the reason most all of the roofs down there are white (whitewashed with lime). The lime helps to purify the water.

In olden days, people made underground tank and covered its walls with thick copper sheets and then collect water in it. then they kept water open in sunlight . even after 30 yrs. the taste of water is as it is. u can make overhead tank , but i think, u cannot collect more water, but what u'll get will be pure.
