I am a lady in late 40's, going through pre-menopause. I have been diagnosed with high cholestrol levels. I know that LDL is not good and that HDL helps in decreasing it. Would it be advisable to take healthy fats like vit-E capsules, that can lower my bad cholestrol, considering my overall cholestrol is high??
i.e should one take HDL even when overall cholestrol is high???

I am in my mid-thirties and have the same problem. The doctor recommended that I watch my diet (no fats that solidify at room temperature) and take fish oil capsules. Purchase some from Wal-Mart and take 2 a day.

Join the crowd. That is what mine was prior to going to the Dr. My first cholestrol lowering medicine was Lipitor and it really cramped my hands and I couldn't use them easily in the morning time. I got off of the meds because of the effects and quit seeing the Dr because I lacked insurance. Now that I have insurance I see the Dr and am now on generic Zorcor and my levels are going down. Now comes in the diet that my Dr wants me to use and try as I may,it does go in spurts. . Thank God for the meds otherwise I'd be in trouble. My Dr basically only wants me to eat white meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. Red meat is OK but avoid hamburger meat as my Dr says it is the worst thing you can eat. Meat of any kind is suppose to be limited to 3oz a meal.Fruits and vegetables are unlimited amounts. No dairy,no breads,no pastas,no sodas,no cereals. . .if it isn't meat, fruits or vegetables you don't eat it. In the past I was able to lower my levels enough that I was able to take medication every other day and perhaps IF I can stay on the diet I could some day go without it completely but I am not there yet.

You can take fish oil but check with your doctor first. A more reliable way to reduce cholesterol is to reduce fat and carbs in the diet and increase exercise. After a trial of that if it isn't lowered you may need a prescription for Crestor or Lipitor.

I bumped up my HDL by 20 points, simply by taking a tablespoon of olive oil daily for a month. Fish oil is good, and walnuts are great, according to 2 cardiologists I saw on Opray Winfrey. They also said the most important number regarding to a person's health wasn't their cholesterol - it was their blood pressure, by a large margin.

OH NO! You should take Fish oil. Sam's sells a big bottle of Omega 3 fish oil capsules and they don't taste funny and they really work on your levels. Also Garlique does awesome too. I used regualr garlic on all the stuff I cooked after I had my daughter (no I wasn't breastfeeding thank goodness) and it dropped my levels 40pts in 6 mons!

vitamin e is recommended when fish oil is used, fish oil reduces vitamin e in the body, so if you take fish oil then take vitamin e upto 400 iu daily, take 1000 mg twice a day fish oil. additionally you can take read yeast rice daily for cholesterol treatment, you can also take niacin 500 mg twice a day. niacin can cause flushing and to reduce flushing you can take baby aspirin half an hour before the niacin. if these all fail or if your cholesterols are very high at the start, you need prescription medicines, good luck

Do a lemonade and Maple syrup diet.
It helps a lot. Do this for 10 days.
There is a book about this, I forget the name.

If you have been diagnosed then your doctor should advise you as to what methods he wants you to use.
Be it diet-medicine- or both.

Cut out alcohol-caffiene-smoking-sugar-cheese.
exercise and lose weight.

But your doctor has the test results- that is the determining factor,

if you are going through pre-menopause if you are currently taking birth control pills those can be the reason your LDL is high. Mine were high because of the pills I am now currently eating oatmeal, cheerios and using olive oil to help.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

be careful with any oil supplements, they can be toxic in large amounts and can cause you to retain fat solulable vitamins to toxic levels. Always consult your doctor and have them follow up with blood tests to make sure you are okay.
