I agree with the idea of finding a fishing club. The more info the better off you are. I DO NOT suggest asking at a bait and tackle shop. I've seen too many folks get railed into buying expensive stuff they don't need this way.

First get a lot of info. Ask local fishermen, they usually wont mind sharing info. Join a local club. Then if you want to get really serious about it join B.A.S.S. and get their newsletter.

I'd start with a medium strength, medium action rod and reel. Make sure your rod and reel match up on line types they can use. Try to start with around an 8 pound test line. The 8 pound will let you catch some bigger fish while being easy to cast and use. Some of the heavier lines can scare off the fish in certain water types and it's harder to cast far as the drag is increased on the reel.

I like jig and top water fishing, so I use some topwater crank baits, 8 pound monofilament line, Terminator Mini cranks, Berkley power strike bass attractant, a topwater frog and a couple deeper water cranks and crawdad baits. But again, ask local fisherman what works in your area. Jigs don't work well in some waters. Some areas live minnows work best, others senko worms are the top bait and still others it's fly fishing or live worms. There are as many ways to catch fish as there are bodies of water.

One more thing I recomend that you might notice if you watch the Bassmaster series. Bring along at least one bait type you haven't seen locals using. Sometimes the most popular local baits get overused and the fish wise up to them. using something totally different can sometimes get strikes where the tried and true will fail.

Good Luck.

Believe me you could use almost anything to catch bass but the best tactics to use are the ones that work and the local fisherman will know what works best. SO...The first step is to find a lake that actually has bass in it. Then find the local bait shop in the area (almost every lake will have one nearby) and ask them where and how to fish for bass on this lake. I like to travel alot and I have fished bass in FL, TN, CA, WI, MI, IL, just to name a few states and what works in one place does not always work in the other. Remember ask the locals they will know what baits and tackle works best and WHEN and WHERE to use it.

Buy a medium sized open face spinning reel/ rod combo. Buy you some pumpkin seed colored worms. Tie a three way swivel to your line. Tie a weight onto a piece of line and thread it to the first eye on the swivel. Then tie your hook onto another and put you rubber worm on it. Tie that one to the swivel. Throw it out. While retrieving, bounce slowly across the bottom. This is the best way to learn to feel for the bite. It's called a "Carolina Rig". When you have a fish, allow it to free spool( open the bell), for a few minutes, and then close the bell and set the hook. Good luck and enjoy. You'll be addicted soon.
