Well, this doesn't fit the wear and tear test, but right now she really enjoys the Crayola Color Wonder markers and coloring books. She'll spend so much time on those some days. Also, she got a toy vacuum for her birthday that she LOVES! It's like a mini upright Dirt Devil, with a light and the noise - totally cute! Books are something that never gets old, my daughter has a bunch, and I always like buying her new ones. She loves to be read to, and help, too! I got her a toy microwave recently because she was so interested in mine, she likes playing with that, she even pretends the play food is hot, and shares with me. It's got a real timer and the thing inside that goes around, and a light, too! (only $10 at Toys R Us)

I bought my son a Video Now. Except that if he takes it wherever he goes - he gets unwanted attention from other kids, when he just wants to be left alone. But in the car, sometimes he watches mini movies on it. It's 1/2 hr drive to the city, so this works out good.
In the car - he usually just had a crayon (now pens & pencils, he's 4), and a notebook. He draws pictures of things he sees - dogs, trucks, houses, etc. He's been doing this since he was 2. A notebook costs as little as 10 cents, and I buy a big pack of them before the school year starts. I give him a new notebook every week, and he's occupied for hours.

The Leap Frog Farm - it is a little red barn with magnetic animal pieces that do the animal sound and sing a song when put together correctly but there is still a cute song when you put two together that dont go. It is for the fridge but my daughter takes it everywhere and she is 15months. Also has frog at the top of the barn that plays 5 songs and if you switch it to french mode the songs are different - no words...

A newspaper! Crumple crumple. So many expensive and complicated children's toys in the world, and none of them meet the bar set by simpler and cheaper things like newspapers, toilet paper tubes, or a brightly coloured autumn leaf. To be a child again and so easily entertained would be divine.

Also they sell these cool crayons that are washable. You can write on just about anything and they clean off with windex or any household cleaner.

My twin two year old boys LOVE books. All books and love to read and be read to. They also love anything with the alphabet or numbers on it as they have recently learned to count to 20 and know the alphabet. We are working forming 3 letter words right now.
