My three year old went for his first night of the Awana program last night and he has to memorize verses in order to get his points or badges....No problem. My problem is that one of the verses is that we are all sinners and Christ died because we are all sinners....Isn't that a little much for a three year old? Sinning and dying are not even in my child's vocabulary. Really how can a 3 year old be considered a sinner? Do you think God really cares if my son didn't put his toys away the first time I told him. I don't think that's a sin. That a 3 year old being a 3 year old. I believe sin that sin is mainly when you have an evil intent. I just don't want my son to feel like he should be scared of burning in hell at 3 years old. It seems a tad extreme. Whatever happened to focusing on the whole "Jesus love me" stuff? Am I overreacting?

No, you are not overreacting. Maybe find a less conservative/extreme group to have your son join. Sin is not an appropriate topic for a 3 yr old. Not in that context anyway.

Awana means "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed" from the Bible in 2 Timothy 2:15. Awana is a bible based and solid Christian organization. Children from all walks of life attend Awana Clubs. Permit your child to play with their technology toys and offer them nothing and Isis and a genuine cult will be their path in life. I am 80 years old and Awana has been a positive influence in my life. My wife and 4 children have been greatly influenced by Godly Awana leaders, Bible memory and Jesus.

I attended Awana as a child and all 3 of my kids have gone to it. I think I understand what you are fearing, but the bible does teach original sin, and no one is thinking or teaching your son that HE is somehow evil. I felt almost relieved when I learned that I was born with a sinful nature, because I knew that I did bad things and it helped me to know that it wasnt because I was evil, but that it was because I'm human. No one is singled out as being evil. Evil and sinful are not the same thing. And if they are to learn about Jesus being their savior, don't you think they should know that truth about why they need him, and why he died? Thats what the the entire gospel is about, and that is the main purpose of Awana- to share the gospel. Kids are really much smarter than we think and unless your son seems really disturbed by this, let him ask questions and learn. I really think that you should talk to an Awana leader there and let them know that you are concerned and that he is not made to feel evil. This program has been so wonderful for so many kids and I hope it is for your son as well. Best wishes.

My 8 year old daughter brought me her Awana's Book to check and it said, "Who told you about the Lord Jesus?". She wrote her Aunt and Uncle, who happen to be Jejovah Witnesses or used to be, now they are ardent Neo Nazi's. Next it says "Now you are that persons son or daughter." That is Blatant Cult Indoctrination Propoganda. Any group or organization that tries to convert young children into thinking someone else is really their Parents is up to No Good!

First of all no one lied to him. I do believe there are ways to teach a young child about God. There are many workbooks and stories to help in this area. Yes the graffic details are much for a child to understand but it is the truth. Teach him while he is young to WANT to please God and the rest won't scare him because he won't want to go against God. God says come to me like a child. A child doesn't need proof of his love or doubts the things he speaks of. Adults teach that. Yes he is a sinner...but all children are born sinners. The parents are required by God to teach them and show them the way. Instead of telling your child he is a sinner when he doesn't put his toys away when you tell him, try something else he understands. Like, God wants all little boys to listen listen to their mommy and daddy. It hurts his heart when you don't listen to us because he said we should listen. It is a commandment to honor your mother and father. That can be explained as his vocabulary grows. I have a son this age and believe it or not they do get it. They don't fear hell because they want so much to please. They don't listen because we are all born of sin. Look into your Bible in the concordance for children and read what he says to teach them and how. Find a toddler bible that words things in little people language and change books as he gets older and his understanding matures. Parents are very important in the teaching because they will turn to you to see if you're doing what God said. Let him thank Jesus for saving him. Tell him He went to Heaven to save him and all believers. I'm sure he'll say aomething like "ok". No fight from the little ones. The older children are harder to teach, so start young.

I don't blame you.

I went to vacation Bible school a few times as a kid, and spent two years in private Christian schools, and that didn't come up for me until I was six.

I think you need to talk to the person in charge, and research the program.
