I got a friend who's employer skipped town suddenly, screwing over dozens of employees, some whom invested a lot of money in the business. the had fake names, emptied their bank accounts so checks bounced, basically dissapeared without notice. They owe people money from property owners to employees. How can we nail these SOBs? What agency will take this case? Is it a ligitamate crime? I'm going to the FBI, Secret Service, but don't know if they'll blow us off. Any other ideas?

You're friend has numerous issues with this case. First, there sounds to be a case of fraud (fake names, bounced checks) That should be reported to the police that have jurisdiction where the business was primarily located. Second, there are also violations of state labor laws (employees not payed for time worked) That can be reported to the state department of labor. Lastly there is a civil issue (investments in the company) For that your friend should contact an attorney.

If the situation involves identity fraud and other criminal acts, you should start with your local police department. They should take a report and forward it to the proper authority (if it needs to go any further than them), or else will direct you to the proper authority. Some crimes are considered federal and could involve the FBI or Secret Service, but others are handled completely by the local police and court system. It just depends on what crimes exactly the person is determined to have committed.

F.B.I. They actually have a division of agents devoted to White Collar crimes. Heck, these days they have divisions for everything...computer crimes, sex crimes, computer sex crimes, etc.
