there are 2 ford focuses in the family, a 2000 and a 2001, both SE that are having the same strange problem. the 2 automatic rear windows on both cars are falling down. meaning if u park the car, turn it off, and go inside, the windows go down, and u can move them up and down from outside with ur hand. they feel very loose. its worse in rain or cold. all we've been able to do is use tape or try to wedge something in them. the dealership said a repair would be $400 per window.

What is causing this, and what can be done to fix the problem, or at least solve it. or at least something better than tape and a piece of cardboard to wedge in the glass.

The Ford Focus uses a cable style regulator to control rear window movement. It is common on these cars for the cables to break or come free from there pulley assy. When you push the window button up or down you probably hear the motor running but no window movement and possibly a crunching noise.
You will have to replace the regulator assembly. They are available from Ford complete with motor from $95 to $140 depending on the side.
You will need to remove the door panel, unclip the window from the regulator by pushing out the two piece plastic pin and then unbolt and remove the regulator.
Reverse removal procedure to install but reassemble the two piece plastic pin into the glass first and hold glass in full upright position. After regulator is in place lower glass onto clip in regulator and push down firmly until it snaps into place.

If your not very mechanically inclined you may want to have this done by a professional mechanic. It should cost about an hour labor for each side.

Ford Focus Window Regulator

Does sound like a window track issue. As previously mentioned, remove the door panel (in case you're unfamiliar with this, look around the edges and toward the bottom. There are usually plastic fasteners that can either be turned with a screwdriver or have the centers pushed in to release). Carefully remove these and the door handles & any other part of the door trim that can easily be removed. The door panel itself should then come off with little difficulty.

By doing this, if you can isolate the part that may be damaged, take it to Ford or Autozone and get a replacement. It could be a fairly simple process to do.

My other concern is that if both of these cars exhibit this problem, what else is defective on these cars that will go out and cost a small fortune?

As some others have stated, it's the cable operated window regulator... The cable frays with use and ultimately snaps causing the concern you talk of. A body shop could probably do the job cheaper if you want to price it with them (as labor in a body shop/glass shop is usually $20 less an hour)

And for the person posting about the 05s27 recall, reread it again... The car either had to have been at one time or is currently registered in certain northern climate states/providences , Ford will check and basically lube the locks for you.

As others have posted, you need new window regulators. There's no ifs, ands ,or buts about it. Either pay to have it fixed, or live with the problem. The latter of the two would not be acceptable to me. Have the dealers perform the 05S27 campaign on those cars, while it's there, if you haven't already.

it sounds like the track that holds the window is loose. my best bet is to take off the door panal, so you can see the window parts at work. then see if you can have the window fall while you watch. that will help you to narrow down where the problem is. then you just need to find a way to make it stop. my guess is that you will just need to brace one of the window tracks.

The window regulators are broken. When you use power windows, always let go of the switch the minute the window hits the top, don't leave your finger on the switch a few seconds after the window hits up, it helps break the regulator.

There could be a lock on the wiper motor that is not engaging, or the wiper motor itself could be unwinding. Could even be electrical. That is a pretty expensive fee, but ford will probably just replace the wiper motor if they can not assess the problem, which is an expensive piece. Take it to a private Garage that can figure out the problem and see if it is worth fixing or find out the problem and do it yourself. Its not hard.
