I am responding to an RFP (request for proposal) for the development of an interactive project. I have no problem with the technical content, but the language is very formal and I wanted to find someone who is used to dealing with contracts and RFPs, particularly concerning work for the government and working with very formal languages to read through the proposal and improve its readability if necessary.

If you are offering to read it for me, its about 5 pages long and ideally i would like to know what your background is.

If you are answering this question with ‘where I could find a proof-reader’ in general, then please refrain from giving childish answers. this is a serious piece of work and I would be happy to pay someone professional for their time.

thank you.

Go under Craigslist and advertise under services wanted or creative gigs. It's free. You will generally get a lot of positive responses from well-qualified freelancers. In addition, any freelance site such as guru will let you post your project, and freelance proofers will bid on it and tell you their qualifications. In general that is a little more trustworthy than answers or even craigslist as you can read reviews from other people they have done work for and see samples of their work. I'm assuming you don't have friends or business associates you trust to do this for you? Because if you do, I would talk to them first!

Many of the answerers below are mistaken. A proof reader watches for typos and punctuation errors. It is the editor's job to make sure that the writing is clear and makes sense. Very few editors will tolerate the grammatical opinions of proof readers. I know this because I have done all three jobs, writing, editing and proof reading. The editor's job is distinctly a challenging one. Proof reading is rote work, and a bit tedious after a while.

I can proof read. Unfortunately I don't have the necessary computer tools to deal with proof reading on a professional basis - on the other hand I could help you out by reading through your text and pointing out any problems.
I'm a translator and deal with all manner of texts from highly technical to boringly legal.
Answer this with your e-mail and I'll get back to you. This is not a free offer!

Try 'The Artists and Writers Yearbook' in your local library. This provides you with a list of possible publishers and agents, with details of their requirements.
It usually costs about £5 pp to have your manuscript proofread, sometimes slightly more when it's a technical work.
Make ensure you copyright your work.
This means placing a small 'c' in a circle at the bottom of each page.
