Reading the "In memoriam" ads like :" Dad, 5 years away now. We will always love you" always make me think; Do people really think that their departed loved one reads that paper? Why would they want to advertise it to the world?

It's a part of the grieving (and living/loving/remembering) process. I doubt people expect loved ones who have passed to read the paper.

Those ads aren't for the deceased, they are for the living. some people really have a hard time accepting that their loved ones are no longer here so people do things like that to make thmeselves feel better.

It's about honoring them. And if friends and family read it, it's a reminder that it's been that long and they're still loved and missed.

It's done in honor of the deceased, to allow the living to remember and reflect.

They do it for themselves, to honor someone they loved. Obviously, they know that the departed loved one will not read it.

I guess you have never lost anyone close to you.. This is part of their healing. Why would you you want to question them in that? Jim
