He's a good friend of ours. He's been there a while, and he's really homesick. it's his second tour there. Any good ideas would be most welcome.

homemade anything! my husband hasn't even been gone a month yet and i've already sent cookies 2x and everyone is clammoring for more! they always love cookies, fudge...whatever it is you make. be sure to wrap them well though. cookies i usually do 3 per saranwrapping with saranwrap between the layers also, then i put them all in tin foil as well. they normally don't get all broken (so far as i know, i've done this about 20 times and have never had a complaint). plain old chocolate chip cookies from the nestle tollhouse recipe on the back are a huge hit.

JenniferB:

"Thank You" for your concern and compassion toward your friend serving in Afghanistan. I don't have any specific suggestions about what you should send, but i would like to clear up some misconceptions about what you cannot send.

He is serving in a Muslim country and the military respects their religion. Therefore alcoholic beverages and pornography are prohibited as is any product containing pork.(pork & beans, pork rinds, etc.)

They are only allowed to accept food items that are in a factory sealed package. It is for the safety of the soldier because there is no way to determine just what is in the homemade product. This doesn't mean that there are not people sending homemade items and that soldiers are not accepting them, but they are violating direct orders by doing so. Please do not send your friend things that could get him in trouble.

One last thing. When you do send something please tell him that I said "Thank You" for his sacrifice and service to the country. My family and I appreciate the work he is doing and pray for his safe return to the ones who love him.

There are few things that inspire an American soldier than something...anything that reminds him of his family and friends.

Perhaps you might put together a scrape book or binder with photos of you and your friend. Include some stories of things you have done together...fun stuff, dumb things...memorable things. Don't be afraid about putting just about any memorable event in the book...I wouldn't mention his ex-wife or girlfriend if it has occured recently however.

My sister sent me such a binder during my 18 months in Iraq and I really appreciated it.

And if you think about it, you might go around to the people he knows in you area (and others he didn't) and just have them sign a page in your book to just say thanks... And please add my name to the list.

He is lucky to have such good friends.

if he is out not on a major base (airfield) than lots of Smokeless Tobacco/Dip/Chew, couple of logs worth if you can afford it. if he cant use it himself, he can trade it. cigarettes are cool too but they might get crushed when you mail it, smuggle some booze to him, cookies, and the marine had it right, adult entertainment is always appreciated
