1. fuel delivered by the fuel pump
2. air mixed in the combustion chamber (cylinder) with fuel
3. fire from the spark plug causes explosion moving the piston
which in turn moves the shaft that turns the transmission. (rpm is how many times this happens in a minute.)

all of above, plus pour petrol/diesel in, and then turn ignition key. there u go....
