The Holy Spirit is the breath of God. The word for "spirit" is pnuema, or breath. When God breathed his spirit into Adam, Adam became a living soul. Not a beath as we know it...air from lungs...but likened to it for a Being of infinite power and perfection.

John 14:26
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 20
21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

The holy spirit is God's active force that he uses to accomplish his purposes and to strengthen his servants in times of distress.
In the time of Jesus, many of his disciples were filled with holy spirit. Many believe that the holy spirit is the third person of the trinity, but we have to ask this--- Were those followers filled with a person? There were 120 gathered together during the time of pentecost and all were filled with God's spirit.
Christians can take full advantage of God's holy spirit by displaying the qualities the spirit helps us to achieve: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."--Galatians 5:22-23

In various religions, most notably Trinitarian Christianity, the Holy Spirit (in Hebrew רוח הקודש Ruah haqodesh; also called the Holy Ghost) is the third consubstantial Person of the Holy Trinity. As such, the various Christian perspectives view Him as God himself, a form of God, or a manifestation of God. The word "Spirit" commonly translates the Greek New Testament word pneuma (Greek: πνεύμα). It is important to remember that Scripture on the Holy Spirit can be viewed by different sects of Christians in different ways. The Holy Spirit is the One who guides a person to correctly interpret the word of God and it helps each person reach new levels of understanding. Since it knows each person perfectly and it is understood that people think differently, it can transfer information to people in ways that they would comprehend it.

The Holy Spirit is part of God that He gives to those of us who truly follow Jesus, as a guide to teach us His Truth.

My definition, The Holy Spirit is what God sent to be with us always when Jesus ascended into heaven.

When people say "Where is God" I tell them that the Holy Spirit is with us always. We can chose not to listen or follow it, but it is there.

Peace!

I don't think the Holy Spirit can be defined in terms that the human mind can articulate. I think all aspects of God are beyond mortal comprehension.

Just my opinion. ;-)
