I'm going to be in NYC over a weekend at the end of Oct. and will be on my own fri. night. I want to find something to do that's fun where I don't look like a wierdo because I'm alone...is there a by-myself friendly kind of place that you could recommend where I can be social? i.e. good restaurant, bar, event. etc.

New York is such a large and varied place that single people are often akways involved in whatever is going on. I lived there for years and did many things of my own without ever feeling out of place. Pick up a paper or TIme Out New York and find yourself something fun to do. I promise you won't feel out of place with whatever you decide would be fun.

Go to Greenwich Village. Why not go to the most popular Starbucks on the East Coast? The one across from Barnes & Noble in Astor Place. Check out the West Village too. Enjoy. Lots of singles are by themselves here. You won't look foolish.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a great place to go. It is open late on Friday, and there are lots of people there on a Friday night - couples and single people so you won't look out of place. I have gone several times (to kill time waiting for my husband) and I promise you won't look like a weirdo at all. You can check out the website to see what new exhibitions they have - the gift shop is a great place to check out as well.
I also recommend catching a movie in Times Square. Its a good way to kill time, a lot people go there and you won't look weird by yourself. I've done it before. And afterwards, just walk around and find a cafe to eat or have drinks at in the theatre district - a lot of people eat or drink alone for a short time, waiting for their show to start (and will meet friends/dates at the venue) or will kill time having a drink while waiting for their dates to show up.

Several recent incidents of girls out at night, in NYC, were murdered, stay in your hotel room and order room service.
As a New Yorker, I would not be wandering around alone, at night, these days. Don't talk to anyone!

Go to a comedy club in Greenwich Village. I did and it was a blast. Just make sure you don't sit in the front row because they may make fun of you.
