"But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."--
Matthew 23:8-9

Jesus meant that religious leaders were not to called by those names. They liked having titles and being noticed so Jesus was reprimanding them.
A parent can be called father, for many of God's servants were called father by their children, but those fathers were not called Father in a spiritual way. Only one is our spiritual Father and that is Almighty God.

I don't remember if Jesus said it or GOD himself but one of them said "let no man call himself father for I am the only one'. It was in the new testament I think. Everytime I try to read the bible, something bad happens to my house or property. Once the roof blew off the other time my car got hit, ect. SO NO I am NOT looking it up. All I can tell you is that I read it in there. It referred to prople like priests who call them selves father this or that. They need to go back and read the entire bible and not select passages over and over.

He said that we should not give to anyone on earth the honor that belongs to God alone. However, He did not say that we should not call our male parent "father". So obviously, "no man on earth" isn't to be taken literally. Also, the concept of "spiritual father" was commonly used in apostolic times. Paul writes ...

For if you were to have countless tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I BECAME YOUR FATHER through the gospel. (1 Cor 4:15)

Likewise, Peter writes ...

She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. (1 Peter 4:13)

Peter wasn't Mark's biological father, but obviously he considered himself the spiritual father of Mark.

The same practice has endured since the earliest days of Christianity, using "Father" to refer to those who are ordained to shepherd the flock on earth, just as the Apostles did.
