Since maternal affection is a natural sentiment, why is it that mothers often hate their children?

Sometimes it is resentment. They resent having to care for someone else 24/7. Or they could feel like they do not get any attention from their husbands after the children come, because wife goes from sexy playtoy to walking milk factory. They feel unsexy and resent that too. I guess sometimes maternal instincts are not really there to begin with.

I could never hate my child but some days I can understand why some mothers do mean things. LOL
Seriously though- I don't know that maternal instincts are actually all bred into us. Some things we learn and empathy and how to show love are learned behaviours. So with that said I think the moms that seem to hate their children are really just frustrated and venting in a bad way. There are good ways to discipline and there are mean ways and you have to learn to motivate NOT dominate a child into comliance. It is hard and there are no manuals on what works with your child- you just have to figure it all out through trial and error.

I watch mothers of serial killers and mass murders get on TV and tell everyone who wonderful and misunderstood their little murders are.

The only mother that hates a child is one with NO material affection or an extremist who, unfortunately, really mis-reads things like the Bible. You don't have to like, but you are suppose to love.

Everybody gets annoyed with little kids sometimes, even their moms. But I wouldn't go so far as to say that they "hate" their children in the vast majority of relationships. Annoyed or frustrated temporarily, yes. Hate, no.

Mothers may dislike or be frustrated with their children, but I doubt they hate them. It's just as you may not always like your mom, but you still love her.

If you're referring to the wierd instances where mothers kill or murder thier children, that's a physical chemical imbalence that occurs, not a natural thing.

Because there is something else going on in their life that is damaging them, usually a problem between husband and wife. If a woman is not getting support and love and nurture from that very important relationship, she will take out her frustrations on weaker people, i.e., the little ones.

Some moms would; I am grateful for my mom. I gave her a run for the money. The older I get, the more I love her.
