school runs are not always necessary its just people being lazy if someone from the school could arrange a local meeting point (teachers or parents) about 10mins walk away from the school then the parents could drop of there at a set time each morning and walk the children to school thus making a walking bus which is recognised in most schools

A lot of the time the school run isn't necessary, its people trying to fit too much in.

Rather than agree to work from 9:30 people have to fulfill that oh-so-important career and be there at 8:30, rather than walk the kids to school. So they spit the kids in and out of the car in order to get to work.

It could be argued that this has come about because most families are now duel incomes. It used to be that one parent would take charge of the kids and do the chore of walking the kids to school.

This is also the root cause of shops being packed at weekends, house prices, road congestion at rush hour etc.

The school run is not necessary at all unless you are located quite a distance from the school. We all walked about 10 minutes to and from school every day, until we started to drive. Of course, if we had time, we would dawdle. If you tell you children that it's a big responsibility and tell them how 'grown up' they would be (walking themselves to school) it might be more appealing to them. This is assuming they are not teenagers yet. Otherwise, give 'em the boot out the door and say 'don't be late', and 'I'll start taking you if you want to start paying for the gas'! Take care.

we have a scheme where i live called the "walking bus" mums volunteer and walk the kids to school, everyone gets police checked and we all wear luminous ta-bards and safely get the kids to school every morning. it cuts traffic as we live in a village and people block every ones drives and park on double yellows. But most of the traffic if from people who don't live in the area, drive miles and bring their kids because its a good school, which pees me of. I went to the same primary school and their was 140 kids now there's 230+

That all depends on how far away from the school you live, I live 3.2k away from my kids school and it would take a good 25 minutes to get there maybe a bit more, if you have only a 10 minute walk I would say don’t be lazy and walk, Its cheaper than filling up the car and its good exercise.

Oh please, don't get me started on this one. How lazy are people who live within walking distance, but drive instead in those bl**dy citroen picasso's. No wonder they need such a big car, it's to accomodate their gargantuan backsides. And, for some reason, some people aren't content with the school that's on their doorstep, they prefer to send their little lambs to a one with a better OFSTED rating. When we were little, you went to whichever school was closest, no argument. People are snobs. And yes, my children walk to and from school every day.

I think kids should walk to school like we all did, no wonder our kids are jumbo sized these days most parents are actually being cruel by not allowing them to exercise by a short walk to school or even to socialise by getting the bus, and why is it that most mothers are not confident drivers too ive never known anything like it - let alone their ability to park!!!!

running will help their lung capacity, but as long as they walk the same distance, it doesn't really make a difference calorie wise. Walking a mile expends the same calories as running it. However, it takes 3 times as long.

We should definitely be encouraging children to be more active, especially in the mornings to get their brains in gear!

Our society has become needlessly paranoid about children's safety. More freedom and responsibility will produce healthier more responsible adults.
