Can you guys help me out with my home school work again. I was just doing areas of squares and I need to know if "4 1/2" is the same as 4.5. I would really appreciate the help (again).

Yes, since 4.5 means 4 and 5 tenths, and 5/10 equals 1/2.

4.5 is the same as 4 and 5/10. Reduce 5/10 to 1/2, and you see that 4.5 = 4 1/2.

ok, look at this:

The first digit after the dot is tenths. so, .1=1/10th, .2=2/10ths and so on. So, you have .5= 5/10ths. What number will go into both? 5! Divide both 5 and 10 (in 5/10ths) by 5 and you get 1/2.

It's a bit harder with a number like 1.4 What do you have? 1 and 4/10ths. What number will go into both of them? 2. Divide 4 and 10 by 2 and you have 2/5ths. add your 1 to it and the result is 1.4= 1 2/5ths

Sometimes more than one number will go into them, but keep trying until you have the two smallest numbers you can get without any left overs.
If you have a calculator and you want to change a fraction like 3/5ths to a decimal (assuming your mom permits this!!!) take the 3 and divide by 5. You'll have your decimal!!!

Find out WHY the answer is what it is.

People that tell you the answer do you a disservice by not encouraging you to learn the necessary information.

Do you know how to find the information in your books? It is much better for the mind to do the work to figure it out.

You need to look up fractions and decimals. Use your glossary and the index to find the lesson that should have shown you how to know the answer for yourself.

even though you are homeschooled, yout still should put your homework questions in the homework section. It is way too confusing when you try to categorize questions based on who you are or what you do.
Make sense?

Yes. You could probably also look this up in the back of your book, and it could save you points for later refference ;)
