Yes but it is the pain that allows for change.

When we are honest with ourselves about our actions and the motives for those actions without rationalizations, our self image is laid bare for the lie that it truly is. When we understand what we are lying to ourselves about and why we are doing it, we then become empowered to change who we are.

Without the courage to face the Truth (and the painful realizations that accompany it) we are unable to change and grow.

Well, yes and no. :) Let me explain .. basically lies are what hurt, not the truth. However, if someone is hurt by hearing the truth, then they are hurt not because of the truth being true but because they are not wanting to hear it for some reason, and maybe that reason is a bad one. Maybe they are believing a lie or living a lie in some way, and their expectations are based on that lie they believe.
Or, on the other hand maybe their reason of not wanting to hear the truth is a good reason, something not based on false beliefs, then does the truth hurt them? Yes, sometimes truth can hurt if truth is meaning the current reality, such as witnessing or hearing something bad or unwanted.
It is usually our responses to things that matter, not what is actually taking place. Maybe we really can choose to not be hurt, but being emotional creatures who are sensitive to things, our feelings are going to feel hurt sometimes. In the Bible, it talks about the Word of God cutting like sword (to kill lies or evil) so we know the Truth here can hurt those who do evil. As to your question, it really depends on the situation and the person's response and where they are in their life/thoughts, as to whether "the truth" is going to hurt them or not, or whether it's somehow "a lie" that is, instead, hurting them.
I hope this philisophical answer helps! :-)

Oh, yes. It can hurt and it does. However, if you acknowledge the truth then you can learn, grow, and overcome.

Like a limb waking up. You know you need to move and get circulation going again, and you know that when you do it's totally going to suck.
