Does anyone know of any natural Herbs or Spices that can be taken by a child for Autism?
I haven't done any extensive studies as of yet, but I thought I might ask to see if anyone was familiar with such things.
I'm wondering what they do as a medical resource in Asian countries?
I know that Eastern Medicine may play a part with some suggestions and also Ayuravada which is used in India.

Can anyone give me some input on this please?
I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and information....
I know all of the options of Western Medicine, but am very interested in Natural Healing...

Thanks........

As a therapist who specializes in Autism and the entire Autism Spectrum, I want to caution you about herbal and supplemental remedies. There are NO definitive studies regarding ANY herbal remedies and Autism. The research that is out there is scattered and questionable AT BEST. Be careful with herbal supplements ... many have side effects that can be harmful, as they are not required to be tested. Also, some harmless side effects for supplements can cause a child with Autism distress as they are VERY resistant to change (ie: there is a supplement that will change the color of urine to a very noticeable GREEN.) Additionally, MANY psychiatric drugs (especially used in Autism and that field) have interaction difficulties when supplements are present. they can alter how effective they are as well as things like how long they last or can magnify their side effects. Best advice ... let you child's psychiatrist know you want to explore herbal remedies and supplemental usage. They should be able to help guide you.

The diet that rlc is discussing is a "gluten free" diet which some claim has had beneficial effects on children with Autism. The main problem with the study is that it did not consider variables such as med changes, changes in environment or lifestyle, and changes in the behavior modifications used -- all of which would play a BIG PART in influencing the behavior of a child with Autism.

My friend's son has autism. They changed his diet...nothing using aisan herbs. I think they cut out wheat and sugar from his diet. There has been a huge improvement in his behavior. Unfortunately, I don't have the specifics.

just doing a search on 'chinese medicine autism', i found this informative site:

http://www.pacificcollege.edu/publications/articles/2005/september/09-072-2005.html

I don't know how reliable it is, but it could serve as a starting point if you want to search for more information in this area of research.
