Why not just make a simple glaze out of powdered sugar, a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon, and a bit of milk. Whisk until lump-free, and drizzle over yoru cake, allowing to drip down the sides.

Homemade Icing Recipe

2 cups powdered sugar - sift before measuring
1 1/2 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoons salt
3 to 4 tablespoons milk

Combine all icing ingredients in small mixing bowl Stir until smooth and well blended Adjust for spreading consistency if necessary, adding more milk or more powdered sugar. Spread icing or drizzle on overly cold pound cake which has sat at least a few hours.

A buttercream icing might work if you don't want cream cheese. You could also make a simple glaze with powdered sugar and water.

Go to the store and pick up a container already made. You can't put anything but cream cheese with spice cake. You could try just plain vanilla but it just won't be the same♥

To make frosting: cream butter and 1/2 cup shortening together. Add maple flavoring. Gradually add confectioners' sugar. Gradually add milk and continue beating until light and airy. Add more milk if necessary. Color with maple coloring, if desired.
