My Dog (dobi) is about to turn 4 yrs old, she started having terrible habits such as taking food off the kitchen counter/table to eat, tears apart the kitchen trash and spreads the trash all thru the house. We have tried to correct this but doesn't seem to sink into her brain that she's being bad. Why has she suddenly started to act out this way.

My dog went thorugh that to do you work ? If so your little dog might be going through seperation anxiety attacks And yes dogs do get that .. My dog hated to be left alone and when we left he would tear the house all up it was terriable .

I had to buy a trashcan with a lid on it or I just put it on the table where he couldnt reach it and then I didnt really lock him but I kept him in the laundry room and not let him run through the house when I wasnt there.

I hope that helps if that is your problem. My little dog had terriable seperation anxiety disorder

Do you walk your dog before leaving? A Dobi would need at least 30 minutes of rigorous exersize to poop her out. Sounds like your dog is 1-bored and 2- anxious about being alone. I always say 'A tired dog is a good dog'.

Have your habits changed in the past few months to 'start' these new 'terrible' habits? You could crate her while you're gone or restrict her freedom in someway. Poop her out first thou.

If she's taking food off the table right infront of you. You have a dominance issue and she needs to learn that she is not alpha...you are. You should be able to take food away from her without her growling or biting at you. Don't let her free feed. Feed her at specific times of the day. Make sure she realizes that the food is coming from you and you have control over the food. You should also be able to take toys away from her without her growling or biting.

Seek professional help too. A local class is very beneficial!!

Good luck!

Have you (or any family members) ever let her grab food off the table? Just one time is all it takes for her to think its ok for her to do it. She needs to learn a "leave it" command. This can be trained using many repetitions. (See link below).

Put the trashcan where she can't get to it and while you're gone and can't supervise her, crate her. When you are home put a leash on her and tie the other end to your beltloop. Don't let her go unsupervised until she's trained to "leave it" and understands the trashcan is not a toy. Give her her own toys to chew on and play with. Make sure soft toys that can be ripped apart are only used with strict supervision to prevent a vet visit for blocked GI Tract.

If she isn't crate trained think about crate training or putting her in the kitchen/mudroom until you're home to supervise her.

Ok, restart your housebreaking again. There is some smell in the trash that she likes and she is trying to get at it. Make sure that your trash tightly sealed. Have you tried one of those open door alarms on the trash can. It will make a loud noise and hopefully distract her from her mission of trash stealing.

Is there a new addition to the family, a baby, a new puppy or another pet? Is your Dog losing he TLC that she once received?

Not pointing any finger here but most times they do naughty things just to get your love and attention again.
