About 7 yrs ago we had to move to the city and the apartment complex we lived in didnt allow animals so I had to give my cat Roudy to my aunt to take care of. Well we would visit sometimes, but everytime he saw me he would run off and hide. He acted like he was scared to death of me and I had him since he was a kitten up until he was adult. He lives with her for a few months and its like he doesnt even know me anymore.

His passed on now, but I would like to know as to why he acted this way cause it broke my heart.

Cats are not especially loyal creatures. When they change to a new situation, once they adapt to that situation, they seem to forget about where they were before. It's different if you leave the cat where it is and you go away. For example, my oldest daughter is away at college and my oldest son lives away from home, but when they come back to the house the cats accept them as familiar. I think your cat, in a different setting, couldn't figure out who you were and therefore was afraid. I know it hurts, but that's just how cats are. They are more oriented towards place (territory) than they are towards relationships (people or even other cats). Dogs are pack animals, so they rely on relationships with other dogs and even humans that are part of their "pack" and they are more likely to remember those who they trusted in the past.

I don't think he hated you. I think that he loved it at your aunt's, and when he saw you, he thought you were going to take him away from her, so he ran and hid.

Cat's don't have the ability to resent and hold grudges - in any case, you didn't do anything wrong to him. You put him somewhere that he was safe and comfortable, you didn't dump him off on some country road or leave him at the SPCA, you made provisions for him, which is all that a responsible pet owner can be reasonably expected to do sometimes.

Cats are instinctive, they are survivors. All they really know is whether they have it good where they are, or not so good. If they have it good, they sort of put everything else out of their minds, they forget about the past and don't want to go back to it. That's all it was. You put him somewhere that he liked, and if he hadn't been ok with her, he would not have stayed with her.

Awwwwwww this is sad. I'm sure your cat still loved you very much but maybe being in a different environment made him/her sorta forget you a little. This may have frightened the cat. Or, maybe the cat was so very happy in her new home that she was afraid you would take her away. Sorta like a child would feel, I reckon. Don't take it personal, you did the right thing.

This is because in the eyes of your cat, you have done the most unforgiveable thing......betrayal. He is upset that you would give him off to someone else. He most likely felt that you didn't love him anymore. Take a moment to think about it. What if someone you loved just up and decided to send you off and didn't come back for months at a time?

He more then likely grew to love your Aunt as his mama. Cats don't have memories like we humans do. I wouldn't say he hated you, I would just say he forgot he can trust you. Especially if he was getting old.... cheer up and don't worry so much, it's not like you had a choice and you did give him a good home with your Aunt. You did all the right things to give him a good life. : )

I highly doubt your cat hated you. He was probably just weird because he was living in a totally different situation. Living with your aunt may have been stressful. You'll notice that an animal can change drastically depending on its living situation.

That is sad!

You did your best, but I'm thinking your cat felt like you abandoned him. Our cats will run and hide a bit too, when my husband and I have gone out of town for the weekend.

Feel better, Honey. It's not your fault for that complex's policies.

He was probley upset you gave him away. When an animal gets use to a routine then we change it sometimes they don't adjust well. Maybe he thought you didn't want him even though you had no choice but to give him to your aunt.

I don't think cats "hate." That's a human emotion. I do think they fear, though, and it isn't always logical. I have a cat that I've had since she was very young, a rescue kitty from the pound. I've always been kind and loving to her, but she's terrified of me...and everyone else!
She's not much of a "pet"...I just leave her alone...but I don't think she "hates" me. In fact, if she's out of food, she seems very fond of me! LOL.
