Yes, basically it is instinct. It's also partially due to their wild cousins, lions, tigers, jaguars, etc.

Also, they're built to be hunters. Eyes about forty times more powerful than ours in the dark, small, agile bodies, and sharp claws and teeth.

it a basic instinct that their born with.like my cats their wild and we tamed them and they kill every thing that we don't want around the house (mice,scorpions,rats,& centipedes)
