The main part of it, describing the begining of it all, was written by GOD himself. In there he also give the rules for the people of Israel to follow.
The rest of it tells the history of the Jewish people since 3000 years ago.
It is the Cononical text of the jewish religion - everything that is in the religion comes from there.

Is this a homeschooling question?
Before Islam and Christianity there was the Jewish Bible and it is nothing like the Christian one be it Catholic, Protestant or Mormon or the Qu'ran. The Jewish bible is Torah (first five books of the bible) and the rest of what Christians say is the "Old" Testament. The Jews do not have an "Old" Testament because their promised Messiah (Warrior) did not come.
Remember, Islam and Christianity are branches of Judaism. They took from the Jewish Myth and created their own.

Jews are God's chosen people. The Bible has the history, stories and all relevant facts to their faith. They only accept the Old Testament.
