There are more than 400 sorts of cheese in France, but only a few of them go to US. And the ones that you found there are usually not the real thing.
Here is a little library:
http://www.fromages.com/cheese_library.php
Gruyere is not originated from France, but Swiss, and it's a cheese without holes. Most people mean "Emmenthal" instead, which is Swiss too ;-) but a "copy" is also produced in France (it's cheese from Jura mountains which is the border between France and Swiss).
Roquefort is the best cheese.
A few others that I like:
Brie, Brousse, Saint-Marcellin, Brillat Savarin, Etorki, Pélardon,
Saint-Felicien, Coulommiers, Beaufort, Reblochon, Buche de chèvre...
Never eat Cancoillote, it's an awful stuff.
