This morning i took my 11 wk old Italian Greyhound outside to go "duty." Well, it was dark, but I always take her to one spot since she is not fully vaccinated. Anhow, it rained last night and she seemed very attracted to this one spot. Well, I couldn't see what it was at 4am but I kept moving her away from that area. I don't know if it was her own feces that moved b/c of the rain, or another dogs, but that WAS NOT the spot she usually goes in. Well, as I left the house this morning, it appeared that the "spot" she was attracted to was poop. Okay, so now I am disgusted with thsi little pooch and am wondering why dogs do this? How much harm is there in her having done that, and is there anyway to help prevent that? I pick up after her, but since she is not 100% comfortable with going outside yet, I like to leave atleast a little something behind for her sniff and realize it's her area. Please give me some advice. This is my 1st puupy besides the one I grew up with as a kid. THanks!

some dogs do this because they are lacking certain nutrients in their diet. it may be disgusting to us but its perfectly natural to them. i would'nt worry about it too much unless she's doing it a lot then i would suggest seeing a vet because they will be able to tell you what she's lacking and i would also advise you to brush her teeth cause her breath will leave a lot to be desired!! Good luck with the pooch.

I wouldn't be worried in less you think your other dog might have worms. Sometimes dogs do that if they aren't getting enough nutrients from their food or they are just bored. You can get something to put in both your dogs food at the pet supply store that helps to stop her from doing that if it's boredom. It makes their poop taste nastier (is that possible?)You want to stop her from doing that now before it becomes a habit.Good luck :)

My 6 y/o chocolate lab still does it and it is very disgusting. Thankfully, she has only done this in our yard. When you take her out, just make sure that she stays on task and limit extra sniffing (use a shorter leash). Try some dog parks where you have to have proof of up-to-date shots. Be very careful, there's been an outbreak of parvo in my area (which is tranmitted through dog feces), keep her vaccinations updated.

It's a sign that she has a vitamin deficiancy - sorry I can't remeber which vitamin & cannot find the book that has it in. Apparently if you feed the dog a couple of pineapple chunks a day it will stop it doing it. If it is eating cat faeces then you won't stop this. All doga are attracted to this as cats don't digest the same nutrients from their food as dogs so the undigested nutrients are appealing to dogs (gross I know....!!)

Hope that helps

I don't know. I strangly hilarious, but uncomftorbly disgusting. I had a pooch once I took care of for a while that did the same thing. I know the pup didn't eat for a while so that's most likely it.
I suggest feeding your pup at least some time before you take it out.

there is a lot of speculation on that, but no clear answers. I've heard people say that a lot of toy dogs do that. I don't think it is specific to toys tho. Some say they are lacking something in their diet. No one really knows. There are some products out there that are supposed to curb this habit, but I've never heard of any that really worked. The best thing to do it to try and keep her away from it.

Love Italian Greyhounds, btw. I have chinese cresteds.

I never heard of that til I read it here earlier today. I have, however, seen them eat cat poo out of a litter box. My husband said that was because there is undigested protein remaining in the cat poo.
Whatever the reason, it makes me gag.
Both my dog AND my daughter's have rolled in other dogs poop before. Mine only did it once, but hers does it more often. Gross!

This ussually hapend to a ***** that eat her Pup's poop, this ussually just fine.
Ussually this happend because the dog that poop, doesn't digest their food perfectly, so there's still something left to eat in their poops (like puppies, so their mother eat it). Based on this theory, probably that was the poop of a pups.
How ever, i never let my dog to eat poops (whose ever poop it is) for hygine reason. Especially in your case, because your hound is still a pup, and not fully vaccinated.

I suggest, on the other time when the hound tries to eat another poop, diciplinate him/her at that exact time (don't let him/her eat it) teach.

Good luck to You...

As disgusting as is this is it is completely normal. Most dogs do this at on point. Try feeding her before you take her outside to do her duty!

There are articles about it on veterinary sites - it must be common. Just type in "dog eating poop" and you will see lots of info.

We have pets too. Sorry I can't give more details.

Good luck.
