Exodus 32
"27 Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD , the God of Israel, says: 'Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.' " 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, "You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day."

ONE OF THE 10 COMMANDMENTS IS THOU SHALT NOT KILL SO WHY IS GOD SAYING TO KILL HERE?

If you read the previous verses (quoted below) you'll understand why this happened. More importantly God didn't specifically say those words but Moses did.

The commandment is not "thou shalt not kill," but "thou shalt not murder." I realize some may translate murder as kill, but there is a difference between killing and murder.

They were commanded to kill those who broke the 10 commandments. That was the penalty. They were commanded to sacrifice (kill) animals to atone for their sins.

I'll read the context and I'll be back.

Okay, this was after Moses came back with the commandments and they had made the golden calf and wanted to worship it instead of God. Those who were killed were the ones who didn't recognize God as Sovereign and who were anarchists. Rebellious. They would have posed a threat to the nation during their wandering and would have spiritually led others astray.

The Israelites had been in blatant sin, while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the 10 Commandments, and the people had made a golden calf so they could worship it, and were having a wild party in which they were going to sacrifice to the god they Had made out of gold.

Ok, if I"m recalling history correctly, the translation used to be, "Thou shalt not murder" meaning don't take a life without just cause.

Also, if you'd recall, that back in the time of the Old Testament, it was nessary to fight for your land. If you didn't pick up arms, you and all your people would have been slaughtered by some other tribe that wanted that prime piece of grazing land. It was a bloody time, but that was a way of life.

When the biblegod tells you to do something, all bets are off; which is why nontheists think the theists are so dangerous in their delusion -- they do whatever they want and then rationalize it after the fact by saying it was really "god" who wanted it done...

This is a little tricky and you have to know how to interpret it properly...

It's wrong to kill UNLESS God tells you. Got it?

Run with it.
