The Best city would be HK... I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit.
First of all, most of the HK people understand English (especially in commercial area, such as, Central, Causeway Bay, etc.).
Food in HK excellent... no matter in Chinese/French/Spanish/Mexican/Indian/Brazilian...whichever style you can name of.
HK has the beautiful night view--Victoria Harbour (Must See!). Also, A must to go to the Peak in order to see a wonderful day view of HK too.
HK is such a *Shopping Paradise*-buy clothes/electronic/etc. for less with authentic guarantee...
Recommendation: Should come to HK as a try before discover China.

The largest cities are the best, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It's also best to go with tour groups if the language barrier is too much to handle.

Definitely the larger cities... Beijing, Hong Kong. It is always a good idea to have a guide or interpreter travel with you to bridge the language barrier.

These answers are all pretty good...since I lived there for a while, and studied the language, I think there are other good places to visit...but I did love Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shenzhen.
