I would think they'd wear their teeth down if they did that too much

My friend has a basset hound that likes to play with and chew on rocks. One day he became very sick, quit eating, and collapsed. She rushed him to the vet, they x rayed him and found that he had swallowed a stone that was too big to pass through his intestines, so it just stuck there. They operated and removed it. The vet said had she waited any longer he would have died. So keep your dog away from rocks or any foreign objects that could be swallowed, it's not worth it!

NO! My dog did this and swallowed one. She nearly died. It cost me $2,000 to save her. Some dogs are known for liking to eat rocks: Labs especially. When they swallow one it can lodge in the intestines, as it did in my girl.

DON'T ALLOW IT!

Some signs to watch for if your dog has been nibbling stones:

Inside of the mouth is dark red instead of a healthy pink.

Inability to hold food or water down. Drinks water and a few minutes later throws it back.

Listless and seems nervous.

Lack of feces due to lack of ability to hold down food.
OR blood in the feces.

We noticed the dark mouth before we noticed the other symptoms. I took her to the vet the second day she couldn't hold down food or water. I thought it was a passing virus the first day but couldn't bear to see her miserable so took her in. Vet said without surgery she would have died.

no. they will swallow them and they do not digest. They can become blockages and will have to be surgically removed. I have heard that if you pepper the whole backyard with lots of tennis balls that this will distract them or something and they wont eat stones. Haven't had the opportunity to try it as my dog doesn't eat stones. She does however like sticks. OMG if she eats another stick I'll beat her with it. Not really.

One of my dogs thinks that logs and rocks are toys. If he could choke on it, then CERTAINLY not.

but I will warn you, my Akita broke a tooth on a rock once. He didn't feel a thing, but the tooth did get infected and had to be removed. My dog is a bit of an idiot - so I have to remove rocks and things I don't want him to chew on, and provide him with safe toys - like Kongs, rope bones, Nylabones, Galileo Bones, etc.

Dogs that eat stones, even small ones end up needing surgery.

No, it can break teeth, and if swallowed, can cause intestinal blockage.

How old is the dog? S/he may be teething... invest in a good hard rubber toy to chew on.

it's fine if he nibbles on it, but if he eats it that's not good b/c it can get stuck in his stomach. try and figure out reasons why he's nibbling on a stone - does he have a tooth problem?
