Because I have now!!!! I do mean Cindy Brady type bunches too, although not as long or as sausage curly LOL.
After dropping my neice off to school this morning, I bumped into another mom in the car park. She had another child with her (guessing 4 yrs) who had maybe in between collar and shoulder length hair tied into two pigtails. Even though the child was wearing sort of gender neutral clothes (t-shirt and jeans) I assumed it was a girl. But when I referred to him as a her, the mother looked at me and said that HE was a boy.
I apologized for my mistake and made a quick exit.
I can't think of a more feminine hairstyle for a boy (not even a ponytail or braids). Can you? The odd thing is, thinking back, the mom didn't seem to want people to think he was a girl either. Strange. Is it a new style?

lol. That same thing happened to me when I used to work in retail! I greeted this lady that came in with her toddler "daughter" that had two puffy pig-tails. I noted how adorable "she" was and the mom got totally offended and thought that I was weird for not knowing that "she" was actually a "he". I just apologized as best I knew how! I hope it's not a trend! It seems like these parents are just setting up innocent bystanders for a fight over the correct gender of their child! It's silly to me. My little boy will sport a bathtub mohawk....it's so tough! lol.

Maybe the mother was deprived of her precious pigtails growing up. And now she is reliving childhood through her son. I don't know. I have seen some freaky lookin punk rock types with them. I saw one younger guy with a pink pigtail and a blue pigtail. And somewhat of a little mohawk inbetween.

Don't feel bad it's a common mistake. Giving the circumstance I think I would have done the same thing. And for a mother to do that to her child, I'm surprised she reacted the way she did. When my son was younger I didn't Peirce both of his ears and put him in a pink dress, take him into to public and be offended when he was refered to as a "her/she". There are many styles and trend that used to only be for boys or for girls. Two years you wouldn't see a grown man and his son walking in the mall both wearing pink shirts! Maybe she knows something the rest of us don't know!

YES!! I have seen more & more boys wearing this type of style & I think it's disgusting. If they want to be little girls, why not put on dresses too? Was watching a college basketball game & got confused, thought it was girls playing by the hairstyles the men were sportin - they all had pigtails, ponytails, etc. Stupid lookin on a male - I don't care WHAT fashion says - it's dumb!!!!! And these are not little boys, either - we're talking grown men . . .

I have seen it, but usually in African-American boys and it is hard to tell since little girls wear jeans and tees too.
I probably would have leaned in and said (so the boy couldn't hear me) "so what's with the piggy tails?"
Poor kid.

I'm sorry for your mistake. I've done that myself! I think that parents should dress their children for according to their sex. It is like putting a baby boy in pink or a baby girl in blue, if you do that don't get mad at someone for thinking your child is a member of the opposite sex!

never seen one with 2 pigtails, just ONE. Yes, the mother can make the kid do whatever, but why would you do things that would obviously be target of teasing and possibly psychological trama is beyond me..
