There doesnt! Its strictly based on tradition.
Tradition dictates this:
A ring is placed on the "ring" finger of the left hand because there is a vein there that leads directly to the heart. Its a way of letting the world know that this woman is "taken" and loved.

A better question is why doesnt a man also have an engagement ring?

It's the way most people associate it. Asking for a women's hand always meant marriage, marriage always meant ring. It doesn't mean that you 2 have to follow this rule.

I guess because the rign signifies commitement (apparently). But I think if the feeling is mutual, you can get a ring later. A friend of mine got engaged a year ago and she has yet to get a ring. He bought her a motorcycle though. I guess it all depends on the understanding of the relationship.

The ring represents the mans feelings of the woman. The price, clarity of the diamond, and design all together represent this. If love is the true motivation, you want as much for a ring as she does. It advertises that she is taken and loved and appreciated by a man that will stop at nothing to keep her smiling.

Because that's how it is. If a man asked me to marry him without a ring I would laugh. Why do you think there is no ring ?

Because when a woman wears a ring it tells the world that she is taken. It's a sign of your fidelity a complete circle that has no beginning and no end. If he can't afford one he shouldn't ask

If your going to go down the path of marriage then that means a ring is involved. If not, then I know alot of couples who never get married and live together happily. Just know which path you're on.
